I banned 23 accounts yesterday…. But 22 of them were the same guy who was using 22 different accounts to downvote the same two images 20+ times.
 
In reality though, we don’t ban people quite as often as some may think. I’ve seen cases where we’ve gone 2-3 days straight without banning anyone.

I’ve banned less people as a mod here than I have fingers on one hand. I really try not to ban people.

Man… In all honesty, I don’t know why people would go out of their way like that… Its just a waste of time.

One thing we try to do is never ban anyone without a warning first. Bans are a last resort, if anything. Also, most of the time we discuss amongst ourselves the merits and the length of a ban. And if a ban is felt as excessive, it will be called out by other mods, and reduced/removed if needed. It’s not something we take lightly.

So where DID the “OP is a duck” thing come from anyway? I’ve heard two conflicting stories. One of those is that we use “duck” because at the time the rules prevented us from calling others f*ggots. The other story is that it was a typo when someone was saying, “Don’t be a dick,” and it stuck.
 
So which is it?

To an extent. There are some polices and procedures specific to mods, such as how to determine which way to merge images or how long a ban should be. Most of it is more procedural than actual rules though.
 
The bulk of actual rules for mods - don’t violate user privacy, don’t make the site look bad, and don’t abuse your power.

We mostly just self-assign ourselves to specific ‘jobs’, more or less. Some of us focus mainly on tags, like me or Zeb, some of us mainly do reports, others do user links, some are devs, and most of us at least do some general moderating.

There’s very little in way of hierarchy - if you will - that is actually anything official. It’s pretty much all one big team with varying specialties. Beyond the mod rules Joey posted above there’s a lot of deferring to subject matter experts for things like tags, artist relations and the like.
 
There are three people who have “stop the world” effects when they go “uhhh hmmmm”, though.
 
As for other places, I’m a sysadmin for Poniverse as well and run some underground stuff. I mostly stay technical or high level administrative.
