Anyone watch Regular Car Reviews on YouTube? They have some great video essays on car culture and such. Especially the most recent one.

Speaking of RCR… My mom bought a Toyota Tercel… very fun video. It relates to me. Talking about loving a car for what it represents even though on the outside it is ordinary

It is a smart design. Tall bulky items can fit anywhere now. It must be a rare wagon. I’ve never seen one. Reminds me of the GMC Envoy. Had a sliding roof like this. Amazing SUV

I will further investigate GM Diesel’s of that era.

I will add that just today I realized Diesel ain’t a cheaper fuel here in the US. While back in Chile, Diesel, apart from the better fuel economy, is also around 20% cheaper than 93RON (~87AKL) gasoline, (used to be up to 30% cheaper but it has risen since).
That clearly explains a lot of the lack of appeal in the economic sense.

About vegetable oil as a fuel in general, it’s definitely possible and it can work very well on modified vehicles. Both with simple straight vegetable oil or waste oil. However, I’ve througly investigated the subject, and my conclusions come to realize that most modern injection systems will suffer the consequences, even if running oil preheating and everything.

Making oil into biodiesel still seems like a better idea. Separating the glicerols from the oil will give you a less viscous fuel that atomizes way better.

I’ve heard horror stories about biodiesel from a friend of my dad in Cordoba, Argentina, where they started using it on Forestry Machinery, and all kinds of problems originated from it. It probably had to to do with low quality standards on production or, improper handling/storage (biodiesel degrades after all). Also running blends (B20 for example), may be more harmful than pure B100. More on the subject later.

As an individual interested in farming I was particularly enthusiastic on the idea of farm made fuel.
(Decisively caught my attention when I saw a German company who made SVO conversion kits for industrial engines (thought there doesn’t seem to be much feedback about them)).

Oil, can easily be obtained from high yielding crops such as Oilseed Rape (”Canola”). An Hectare of this plant can produce more than 2500 liters of oil per growth cycle.

According to my simple calculations, A modern cereal/arable farm could dedicate 1% to 3% of their field area to growing this crop, and this should give them enough oil to fuel their entire field operations for the year.
The appeal of a lower price, do to the lack of intermediate buying/selling fees and on site production could bring cheap, low carbon fuel to farming.

The dismissing of SVO (straight vegetable oil), came when I understood how biodiesel can easily be made on site, when it’s with high quality oil.

2 stage acid process seems to produce higher quality fuel than the more common single stage process.

Unfortunately, both process do require a big portion of methanol, which changes the perspective on how renwable and independent it is. Process can be made with ethanol however it’s generally more difficult and not as well understood.

Also, recent technologies have made it easier to make methanol from methane gas, which can be easily obtained from an anaerobic biodigester. That could be a game changer.

Also, yes this people seem stupid enough to not to be able to fill an adblue Diesel exaust fluid tank with the proper liquid.

TLDR: Blablabla fuel, blabla plants, blabla biodiesel, blabla methanol, bla bla DEF.

It isn’t bad here, $2.55 last time I checked.

In other news, my Subaru outback has had a near-complete failure of the two front cv driveshafts yesterday. Going to be replacing those today, might also change the water pump. Wish I could’ve gotten some new brake discs and pads but oh well.

I’m also saving for some rallyarmour mud flaps.
