Saw a few races at Road America today. The second one was all Miatas. It was a cool event even though the weather wasn’t. I only stayed about three hours because it was really hot and there was nowhere comfortable to sit. The next time I go I’ll be better equipped.

They’re having a Stadium Super Truck race in August with ramps on the track for the trucks to fly off of. That sounds awesome.

I like how Lincoln is going with a travel themed naming scheme for their vehicles, it’s a hell of a lot better than three random letters for names, but calling a small crossover Corsair? That’s not fitting. Something called a Corsair should be bold. What if Lincoln made a big sexy coupe like an American E class? Yeah, that would be the ticket.

Doesn’t look bad but it doesn’t remind me of this if we’re talking about something that’s “Sailing the streets;” this is a “land yacht.”

Then again, they still have to meet regulations for; fuel economy, emissions and crash protection. I’m sure that if they could do so with such a large barge (referring mostly to the big front end) and if they knew it would sell, they would build it.

last note: this isn’t a complaint but “Corsair” is awful close to “Corvair.” The Corvair’s been out of production for about 50 years, though, so that’s a small point.

If anyone can bring back large luxury cars,
it’s gotta be the French.

Yeah I’m calling you out!

They’re famous for beefy economy motors.

There’s no reason to hit light speed!
What matters is they accelerate and that’s a winner in my book.

I don’t know what the market would be for a large luxury four seat coupe/convertible Mustang, but it would pretty cool if Lincoln built one. Lincoln is already more Cadillac than Cadillac. They could build the Elmiraj Cadillac won’t.

@BarryFromMars
I wonder which is heavier: one of those land yachts or a current full size SUV.

Then factor in gigantic-displacement motors, 3-speed automatics, and the approximate aerodynamics of a brick, and you’ve got a perfect recipe for appallingly poor fuel economy.
(Those old barges are still so much cooler than modern crossovers/SUVs, though. I’d be curious to see how one would do with a modern engine and transmission.)

They might get about the same as current SUVs unless you put a Turbo Diesel in one; I can see 25 HWY easily with a 2.8 Cummins but why do that now when you can get a different 8 cylinder Diesel for cheaper if it runs just as good? You may want to upgrade a few things

That sounds about right; I wouldn’t expect them to compete with Prii or anything, but low-mid 20s highway is still a huge improvement over stock.

And speaking of modern SUVs, say hello to the 2020 Blazer:

Yep, GM decided it needed yet another midsized-ish on-road crossover, so they made this thing and slapped the Blazer nameplate on it. It’s probably a perfectly decent vehicle, but it’s kind of disappointing considering how Ford’s bringing back the Bronco.

I understated it a bit, I’m sure that G.M.‘s 8 cylinder 6.5 T.D. (a 90s engine, mostly) would get mid 20s HWY without much modification in one of the 70s land yachts (providing it has overdrive and you drive long enough.)

I’m not sure how much better a 2.8 Cummins is in this application but the Chevy Colorado Pickup, which comes with a 2.8 Cummins and is about 4,300 pounds (800 - 1k pounds less than the 73 Lincoln Continental) gets around 21 City to 30 HWY.

@Lord Seraph
Too many; at a glance, I’m not sure why this needs to exist next to the Traverse and Equinox, or GMC’s Terrain and Acadia, or Buick’s Envision and Enclave. Seems like it’s supposed to be some sort of mid-large size class, maybe? At some point they’re just going to be cannibalizing their other models’ sales if they keep up this super specific sizing.

@BarryFromMars
My guess would be that if the 2.8 TD gets 21/30 in a Colorado, it’d probably get something like 17/25 in a Continental. All that extra weight is going to kill your city mileage, and a modern truck is probably quite a bit more aerodynamic than a 70’s land barge on the highway.

It’s probably more worth it to use a 6.5, considering; the 2.8 costs $9,000 new and you could find a good used 6.5 TD in the $1k - $2k range which would still give a considerable mileage boost. You’d have to fix the problems G.M. tacked on like poor oil cooler lines but that’s not costly to modify. I can get 25 HWY (if I drive long enough) in my 99 Suburban that has a 6.5 so it’s not a bad engine.

BTW, if the 85 Caprice Classic Diesel* (3,600 pounds, 0.48 Coefficient of Drag, 8 cylinder 5.7 - or 350 - engine) could get 30 HWY like the stories I heard then why is a 4 cylinder Diesel now not getting a lot more? I know the Colorado’s 4,300 pounds and I read it had a 0.5 Coefficient of Drag so it’s mostly just 700 pounds heavier. I don’t think weight should lower the fuel efficiency THAT much, especially on the highway.

  • The stock 5.7 wasn’t a good engine. People sometimes stuck G.M.’s 6.2 Diesel in, got a small power boost and still managed 28-30 HWY so I heard.

@BarryFromMars
Yeah, weight in an idealized highway scenario should have no effect on the mileage; you’re not accelerating, so all you have to do is counteract drag. The thing about comparing Cd, though, is that it doesn’t tell the whole story since you’re counteracting D, not Cd:

D=Cd1/2ArhoV2

Rho is air density, V is speed, and A is frontal area, which is what’s probably throwing a wrench in the comparison here. Doing some rough estimates from Wikipedia’s height and width numbers, A(Caprice) is around 4175 in
2 and A(Colorado) is around 5194 in2. So, assuming they’re moving at the same speed, in the same environment, 1/2 rho V2 cancels and we have:

D(Colorado)/D(Caprice)=0.5/0.48*5194/4175=~1.296

So the Colorado has to deal with about 30% more drag than the Caprice. I’m not sure if that accounts for everything, considering the transmission and rear-end gears probably play a pretty significant role, but it’s probably a big part of why the Colorado isn’t giving VW TDIs or Prii a run for their money.

I think the Genesis brand (Hyundai) has a great plan for brining back luxury brands. Full size V8 sedan with all the technology, just under a Korean nameplate. Genius! They just need people to get past brand loyalty. Maybe if they market it towards enthusiasts they’d be more popular.

@Flying Pancake
That’s mortifying. I hate seeing the word “Blazer” on that thing. It looks so wrong. If only they could slap a ZR2 label on it and put a lift kit on it. That might be the best of both worlds
