PB was a special case. 20% and Bronibooru were the only other two image boorus out there, and both have, afaik, a moderator queue, meaning no image macros, memes, WiP, screencaps, etc.
We set up up Derpi for several reasons. The main one was to prove that we could make it at all, another to serve as our own “private” image booru, and lastly to sell the idea to Eco to transition from his version of Shimmie to booru-on-rails; that is, still being Ponibooru, but using our new, actively maintained codebase.
Back in Jan of last year I (on my own) ran a few ads on PB to try and just get some traffic for balancing and testing; wasn’t looking into replacing PB or anything, but we needed to know how the system would fair with more than a dozen users. I think PB veterans might remember how well that went (and how any thread mentioning with us was deleted post-haste).
Anyways. Taking over wasn’t ever our plan; we just wanted to help Eco out by giving him a “thing” to make life easier. And then bla-bla-bla happened. Derpi hasn’t really changed much, visually from the first day, tbh. More buttons and doo-dads, but the essence is pretty much the same as it was over a year ago: show pretty pony images as simply and quickly as possible.
