A lot of people feel that way when the truth is that, a lot of those bands don’t just “growl bullshit” a lot of them do growl very meaningful things, and as for not being able to hear what they say, actually when you listen to a certain band’s screaming and growling close enough and for a long enough time then you can hear what they are saying.

heh, I can’t make it through pretty much any black metal without bursting out in laughter. but I can strongly appreciate your apparent love of long marathon-style songs.

I am reminded of a particularly insane piece by Mercyful Fate now.

I could really do without his “screeching”…but it’s what the dude was known for. But there is something strangely enduring…I suppose because his normal singing reminds me a bit of Dave Mustain: rough and characterized and not technically very acute, but it fits with the music. and I can actually understand what he’s saying…lol.

yes, there’s plenty of metal that deals with interesting context, it’s part of what makes it fun…but I have always felt that by and large the reason why those front-men are growling has a lot more to do with not really being able to sing well in the first place.

but that’s fine, tons of folks seem to like it. All I hear is cookie monster. GWAR is pretty what I point too when I make the point that you can have monstrous and bestial vocals and still actually be singing.

It’s not due to them not being good singers, it’s because it adds more anger to the song. Growling and screaming are two vocal techniques that are just meant to add the feeling of anger to the song. Which explains why I like a lot of Melodic Death Metal, Post-Metal and Grindcore, because I prefer vocal techniques in a song over lyrics. Though lyrics are important in a song I don’t find them as important.

It’s been a long time since I’ve listened to Wolves in the Throne Room. I remember them being all right. Liturgy I’ve not heard.

@WassonG
It’s understandable why people would think black metal is laughable, Bal Sagoth especially. Their music is incredibly cheesy but I don’t care because the music is also incredibly epic.

I do generally favor longer songs. I feel the standard length of 3 minutes is too confining.

Liturgy are fairly recent, there’s a lot of controversy behind them, a lot of people call them things like “Hipster faggot Metal” and “not trve kvlt” If you ask me I think that they’re great, and honestly one of my favorite bands. I’m gonna buy Aesthethica sometime.

I listened all the way through Aesthethica and sorry to say I don’t like it. The first minute of High Gold sounds like pennies rattling in a can and Glass Earth is plain annoying. I can’t consider the album black metal and not because it isn’t “trve kvlt” or any of that silliness. I’m not sure what to call it.

That’s understandable, it’s really hard to predict who would like the album or not. It is a Black Metal album, but it’s just a different style of it, they’re a self described transcendental black metal band. I guess you could say that it’s just different from what you’d usually hear in Black Metal.

How can you get through 4 pages of a so-called “metal thread” with barely the tiniest off-hand mention of Iron Maiden? Judas Priest? Black Sabbath? GET ON MY LEVEL PLEBIANS.

For serious though, huge fan of Iron Maiden, but I’m incapable of answering any question that goes “What is your favourite X” (unless X is “pony”). A list of a few bands that spring immediately to mind when you ask me what I like would look like this:
Iron Maiden
Ayreon
Dream Theater
Finntroll
Sonata Arctica
etc.

Frankly at the moment I’m in more of a classic rock swing and I’m tending to listen to things towards the more traditionally rock ‘n’ roll end of metal, so bands like Mötley Crüe and AC/DC have prime positions in my playlist right now. Generally though I like good old fashioned classic heavy metal, power metal, and prog above most else. Have to put myself in the category of folks who get put off by most death metal vocals, I’m afraid - the style doesn’t do anything for me and I’ve got no interest in forcing myself to repeatedly listen to something I don’t actually like the sound of in an effort to understand the lyrics.

As much as I respect the classic bands for what they’ve done in the world of music, and I don’t mean to say that any of those bands are bad, terrible, or they suck when I say this but…I’ve never been a fan of AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath or really any other old school loud rock/metal band, with the expection of the occasional Slayer song (Not saying that I wouldn’t listen to any of those bands, I’ll only sit through them when someone else puts them on). And besides I’m more a Pink Floyd, Rush and Led Zepplin kind of guy when it comes to old school rock music.

Seconded. To each his own, of course.

Personally, I prefer classic metal. Maiden, Sabbath, Priest, stuff like that. Also rock and metal covers of videogame music, like the Black Mages or pretty much all of Guilty Gear.
Though truth be told, I’m not so much into Metal as I am into good guitarwork. Be it metal, rock, country, blues, bluesrock or whathaveyou, as long as there’s some nice guitars I’m game.

Incidentally, have some Brocas Helm %(thank you Brütal Legend)% and for some slightly different kind of metal, have some Com.

The pretentiousness involved in calling one’s music transcendental and writing a manifesto would explain the hate for Liturgy.

@Carcer
Sure, I and most metal fans love the classic bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Blind Guardian. I thought it was too obvious to mention.

Yeah Hunter is like that, as so proved in their interview, oh well I like their style of music, it’s different, but to me it’s different in a good way. Oh well do you at least like Burzum?

I think I may have given the wrong impression. I’m not a big fan of black metal. The songs I posted I posted because I consider them excellent examples of black metal going beyond its roots and pushing the genre into new and interesting places. Even those bands I don’t listen to often. They’re too intense for casual listening. I’m more likely to listen to power metal or old school heavy metal on a given day.

Oh I thought that you were a bigger fan of BM, that explains it all. It seems as if a lot of people here like Power Metal and older heavy metal, which isn’t really in my sort of preference. I’m not a huge fan of Black Metal as well though I’d honestly rather listen to Liturgy than Dragonforce.

I believe archestereo means BM as in bowel movement.

Anyway, there’s more to power metal than Dragonforce. You might want to check out Kamelot, Blind Guardian, and Hammerfall.
