So I was listening to the song One Toke Over The Line by Brewer & Shipley and at first I thought the song was about suicide by jumping in front of a train until I found out that it was actually about smoking marijuana in a railroad station cause “toke” was a 70’s term for puffing a blunt. The 70’s were a hedonistic time, I swear…

I’ve misheard so many lines from “Breakfast in America” (the song, not the album) by Supertramp in so many weird ways that I can’t listen to it any more without cringing.

Queen is a weird case of a band that went from being a joke in the eyes of critics and The Older generation(Beatles and The Who members didn’t have flattering things to say about them) but are worshipped as gods by their contemporaries and people who grew up on them

A lot of bands were kind of like that, actually. Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath are the first couple that come to mind. It’s part of the reason I don’t take critics seriously.

Late, but I found out that You Need To Calm Down by Taylor Swift won Video Of The Year at the VMA’s because of course it did.

The video is about accepting people regardless of their sexuality, gender, sex and all that. Without getting into whether the video is good or not in preaching its message, it’s the type of stuff that award shows eat up like soufflé because it has a positive vibe to it and it’s progressive. Looking at it, it was an obvious award bait and it’s not surprising that it would win Video Of The Year because of it.

Korn was…an interesting band  

Congrats to Lizzo for taking the number one spot with her song Truth Hurts, even if I think the song sucks.

I love that it’s slowly becoming seen as cool to like MCR again.

So Fantano just gave the newest Tool album a 4…..  
I can’t wait to see Tool Fans and Fantano drones duke it out

I’m not really surprised, TBH. Anthony has crap taste in music and craps on prog like other critics.

Why the hell did Kansas turn into a Christian rock band in the early ’80s? That should be a Todd in the Shadows Trainwreckords episode. WTF were they thinking?

Yup, that was a thing that happened. Lead guitarist Kerry Livgren and bassist Dave Hope both converted to Christianity, and since Livgren was the band’s main songwriter, their music started basically becoming Christian rock. Lead singer Steve Walsh didn’t like this decision and quit the band, so they replaced him with a different guy, but soon after then, violinist Robby Steinhardt (the Hagrid-looking guy) also jumped ship, and the band broke up. When they reformed without Hope or Livgren later on, their music went back to having primarily non-religious lyrics.

Speaking of Christian Rock  
Skillet being Christian Rock makes sense when you look at the lyrics but before I found that Out I just assumed they were another Post Grunge/alt Metal band

Music critics are so wack. They’ll trash prog for being too lyrically complex, but then they’ll go hate on bands like Halestorm and a lot of hair metal when they have lyrics about sex and partying, calling them “shallow” and “butt-rock.”
 
It’s like it’s nearly impossible to hit that lyrical sweet spot to please the critics.

Now I hope Todd reviews that album cause that idea just sounds baffling. It would be like if The Eagles never broke up decided to go new wave.

Yep. You can tell with album titles like Audio-Visions and Vinyl Confessions. After lead singer/keyboardist Steve Walsh and violinist Robby Steinhardt left, they took drastic measures to make up for it (literally, their next album was called Drastic Measures) and kind of turned into a Loverboy/Foreigner type of ‘80s rock band, but it didn’t really pan out for them, so they broke up.
 
When they reformed later with Walsh and Steinhardt back in the band, Livgren (the main dude pushing them in that direction) was wisely left out of the reunion.

Not surprised that they would go that direction since the 70’s were over and power ballads were the new thing. Also unrelated, but I confused Steve Walsh with Joe Walsh of The Eagles because of their last names.

Speaking of ToddInTheShadows, I wonder what his next Pop Song Review is gonna be? Señorita? Truth Hurts? (My money is on this one) Someone You Loved?

I mean, I guess Kansas’s lyrics were always kind of spiritual (especially on songs like “Dust in the Wind”), though not what I’d call religious. Spiritual in the same way of the lyrics of a lot of ‘70s bands… from using a lot of drugs. (It’s the unspoken truth of the era.)
