One of my least favorite eras of music is the early 60’s. It can best be summed up in a few words: Manufactured teen idols, stupid novelty songs, forgettable dance crazes (most of them being Twist clones) and underwhelming instrumental tracks. The only good things about this period were the film scores, the soul songs both Motown and not, the rise of surf rock and the more serious folk songs. It really makes you wonder when you ask someone about 60’s music, they’ll often mention the latter half of the decade and almost always forgets the beginning, for a good reason.

Glad you mentioned folk otherwise I would have had to. There was some good jazz then too.

I guess in terms of rock music the early 60s is kind of this awkward transition period between 50s rock and roll and the classic rock the latter half of the decade is known for. It’s like rock was going through puberty then.

The reason for this was because of rock n roll’s backlash. By the time the 60’s arrived, rock n roll was more or less dead with Elvis joining the army, Chuck Berry’s allegations of sexual abuse, Little Richard switching to gospel and the infamous “the day the music died” event. Soon, record companies tried to push for a more “safer” alternative to rock n’ roll, which lead to the rockabilly and pop sludge that became popular in 1960-1963. Thank god for The Beatles ushering in the British Invasion and making rock music good again.

Sweet F.A.
Well I just finished reading the Billboard Year End List for this year and I found out that Shape Of You is the biggest song of the year. Would’ve loved it if it was Despacito but whatever.

Eh, I’m not a huge fan of either.
@TheHappySpaceman
Dude, me and you should be like friends or something. That comment you made listing all of those songs just made my jaw drop. I’ve never seen some one with such a vast music knowledge, and I gotta say I’m pretty impressed. (btw, Giorgio Moroder is a great producer alongside Jimmy Jam And Terry Lewis, Timbaland and Mike Will Made It)

Yeah, I’m a pretty major music nerd, especially classic rock. I know far too much about that. It makes me a good music reviewer, though.

At least we got some of those folk songs from that era. And hey, at least the Beatles started rising around that time, too.

Plus, some of those instrumentals were okay. Ever heard “Telstar” by the Tornados?

Fun fact: The guitarist in that band is none other than George Bellamy, the father of Muse’s lead guitarist Matt Bellamy. Matt even cited this song as inspiration for Knights of Cydonia.

That’s such a great song. Always reminds me of ’80s teen movies, for some reason. Possibly because of this.

I did mention The Beatles on my other comment, so yeah thank god they rolled around. Yes I’ve heard of Telstar, it was a number one hit in 1962, it’s amazing! It’s too bad that it’s kinda hard to find on YouTube. Other instrumental favorites of mine from the time are The Happy Organ by Dave “Baby” Cortez, Walk Don’t Run by The Ventures, Kokomo by Asia Minor and On A Carousel by Floyd Cramer. Geez, talk about nepotism. I will never trash talk Debby Boone, Nelson, LMFAO or Hot Chelle Rae ever again.

Nepotism? What do you mean?

Oh, wait, you mean with Muse? Nah, probably not. I mean, they started playing in clubs for at least five years before they got a record contract.

@RhodieNite
I like his music. I always have, but it’s nice that he’s experimenting more with the sounds of the past.
