Basically, in 1985, Tipper Gore and the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) created a list of the “Filthy Fifteen” songs that they believed to be explicit, and proposed censorship of music, such as forcing record stores to put music with explicit lyrics under the counters, pressuring television stations not to broadcast explicit songs or videos, and printing warning labels on albums.
In particular, they attacked the metal band Twisted Sister for what they perceived to be violent and even Satanic messages in their songs and music videos. Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider delivered an epic blow against them in court, as did rock musician and producer Frank Zappa and folk musician John Denver.
The PMRC did eventually get their way with the warning labels, which is why you’ll frequently find this sticker on certain albums:
Incidentally, this wound up having the opposite effect, as it was now seen as a badge of honor and boosted sales of the albums that were given the Parental Advisory warning.
