I feel like Rock ironically had more unity when bands of Different genres were trash talking each other and trying to present their genre as the best
Nowadays they ignore each other and stick in their own genres

What’s an album you would recommend that you’re pretty sure no one here has heard of?

My recommendation is “Paint Me On Velvet” by The Austin Lounge Lizards. It’s an affectionate parody of country and bluegrass. It really is “the thinking man’s country music”.

Tracks include:
A blues song about George Orwell’s “Nineteen Eighty-Four”.
A romantic duet about infidelity.
A song inspired by “Moby Dick”.
The bluegrass version of a Diss Track.
An acapella gospel retelling of “Three Little Pigs”.

and more. It’s kind of a low-key masterpiece.

Since you Know more about Metal than me

Why aren’t Power and Doom more popular? One would think that due to the “Pure metal” Mentality these genres would be more popular than the Punk Influenced Speed/Thrash/Death/Black Metal genres that Motorhead pioneered

You know, kawaii metal. Japanese pop metal bands like Babymetal, Ladybaby, and to a lesser extent Band-Maid. (I wouldn’t really say they fit in the category, since they’re more just pure J-rock/J-metal, but Babymetal certainly paved the way for them.)

Are Talking Heads television and Joy division considered Post Punk or regular punk?

I know that Joy is considered the pioneer of Goth but I am not sure what Punks see of them

In the first case, the main difference I know is that new wave tends use more electronics like synths and drum machines.

Shoegaze and dream pop seems like an arbitrary difference to me. I think the implication is supposed to be that dream pop is less heavy/“noisy” and more melodic or something. But they pretty much sound the same and seem to exist only for hipsters to have pointless arguments.

“New wave” was honestly a term that was used to apply to everything back then. I’ve seen Billy Idol and INXS classified as new wave and I was like, “What?…”

The best way I could describe it is that it’s a poppier offshoot of punk that also made use of synthesizers, unconventional chord progressions, and a quirky delivery. The Cars, Blondie, and Talking Heads are my go-to new wave bands, though I think the latter is also classified as post-punk.

So why are the Strokes called Post Punk despite being mostly influenced by The Stooges and Velvet underground(Protopunk)? Or The White Strokes who were mostly influenced by Blues bands?

Did Marketing basically group every Rock band not mainstream in the 2000’s in the “Post Punk Revival” group?

Stuff like this is why the “Indie Vs Alternative” divide is fucking stupid, The Strokes had more in common with Nirvana than they ever did with The Killers.

No one is allowed to make protopunk anymore because punk has already happened. Protopunk is basically the type of garage rock from the 60s and early 70s that punk bands listened to. Ironically, though, music more influenced by protopunk these days tend to have more in common with post punk because what punk bands did was they’d listen to the Stooges and say “Let’s play that but faster.” And post-punk came about when punk bands decided to start playing midtempo more melodic music.

And I haven’t heard White Stripes called post-punk. I have heard them labeled “punk blues” though, which I think suits them a bit more.

As a rule of thumb, I’d say the more specific a genre is, the more pointless a distinction it is though. To me, “indie” has always been more of a production style than a genre and “alternative” is so vague and pointless it doesn’t mean anything. I’m fine with just calling it all rock.

A lot of the Garage Revival bands got called Post Punk for some reason in the 2000’s, which made people more confused

I’m fine with just calling it all rock.

Sadly not everyone agrees with you , Rock nowadays is more divided than Back when Axl and Kurt were threatening to kill each other and Sid was saying “Fuck Pink Floyd” every chance he got. A lot of Indie Rock fans flat out refuse to listen to anything not Indie , Metalcore fans just want Metalcore and “DadRock” fans just wanna listen to those Old Bands(ACDC, RHCP, Bon Jovi, U2 and GnR are all making more money in tours than any modern rock band)

I blame this on Pitchfork
