Forgive me for saying so, but you don’t seem to know what you’re talking about.
Bob Rock didn’t “force” Metallica to abandon solos. First off, it was Lars’ idea. You know, Lars, the man who completely borked up the production on …And Justice for All? Bob Rock only came in to diffuse the situation.
Secondly, Bob Rock had been doing the band good since The Black Album. He was a good producer, for one thing–before working with the band, he had previously produced Dr. Feelgood, one of the best rock albums of the ‘80s–and, as previously mentioned, they needed someone else producing their albums, since we’ve seen what happens when they let Lars get behind the mixing board.
