People are far to quick to throw the baby out with the bath water these days, about both big and little things, from political movements to video games.

Something can have problems or being liked by assholes and still be good and valid.

I’ve got a few examples myself.

Skyrim for instance has its flaws as a video game. Like all Bethesda games it is buggy as fuck (at least at release), I find the story to be subpar to the point that I just plain ignore it and there is not a single character that I find charismatic or even that sympathetic. The combat is clunky and simplistic and the enemy level scaling works only for the the first 30 levels or so, after which all challenge disappears as you outpace all of the monsters and bandits.

However, I still adore the game. I love it dearly and according to Steam I’ve played it for a total of 262 hours, because for all its flaws it offers me a vast, wonderful world to get lost in. The only other game to really deliver this to me in recent memory is Far Cry 3.

On a larger level I find that I am largely sympathetic to the broader goals of feminism, that is to say the goal of bringing equality between the genders for the benefit of all, however thanks to the actions of tumbler dipshits and insane people feminism is now viewed as the domain for sex hating psychopathic control freaks.

And on the most personal level, I see libertarianism and atheism being written off because of reddit asshats and rich fucktards dragging both through the mud by acting like the philosophies are just excuses for them to act like complete assholes.

Can there please be something on the Vita worth buying? Like, more than just random ports?

Is there a decent LEGO substitute that has the quality of them but without the insane prices? Holy hell, is LEGO shit expensive.

I’ve seen the writing criticism leveled at skyrim a lot but to me, the writing in oblivion felt about the same but wackier. I do enjoy oblivion’s writing more but I honestly can’t think of any characters from the game other than sheogorath and a couple of members of the blades. In skyrim there’s not many distinct characters either but I really enjoy the ones that are there. The members of the dark brotherhood are a good example. All of them at freaking crazy in their own special ways.

Also some of the things I was talking about are things that are considered bad just because they’re not quite as good as the previous one. The new tomb raider for example has some of the most fast and fun cover based 3rd person shooting I can think of outside of vanquish but… You can count the number of puzzles on your hands. Which I can understand pissing people off but the shooting is so good though.

And then there’s duke nukem forever. I say this as someone who A: thinks duke nukem 3d is a masterpiece and B: got duke nukem forever for 7 bucks thinking it was going to be garbage: duke nukem forever is at least one of the top twenty most interesting modern first person shooters I can think of from the last ten years. If I’m given the choice between standard modern warfare battlefield type games and a game where I fight a giant three boobed xenomorph and then shrink down to fight tiny alien pigs in a mcdonalds, I’m gonna choose three boobed xenomorph.

I don’t feel like making a detailed post about serious issues but I totally agree with you.

Kreo are good and fairly cheap compared to lego. There’s not much variety among them yet though. The mini figures aren’t as sturdy as lego either. Mega blocks has stepped up its quality as of late too but I don’t know about a price.

I absolutely adore the new Tomb Raider, but then again when was the last time before its release that we had an actually good Tomb Raider game? I don’t mean one that was just passable, I mean and honest to god good game. It is another game that does what Skyrim and Far Cry 3 did for me, plop me in an exotic location where no matter what direction I headed in I’d finding something interesting (granted, in a much more linear fashion than the other two.)

As for Duke Nukem Forever, well I see your point but I still dislike the main campaign quite a bit. The satire just fell really flat for me and there was that one moment in the alien hive thingy that made me kind of hate the writers a little. The DLC campaigns were better though, they were funnier and didn’t have any uncomfortably rapy moments. I’d still take it over another CoD sequel though. There are very few games I regret spending money on, CoD BlOPs II and Aliens: Colonial Marines are them.

Personally, I do think many companies are doing it wrong… and I would not hesitate to tell them that. However I don’t think they will go bankrupt just because they made a mistake. Consoles are a lot of fun and I love to sit down with my N64, PS2, Wii, or 360 and play a few games. However personally I just look back and think things were nicer back then. Before people start freaking out and calling me a nostalgiafag, I think N64, PS1, and possibly Dreamcast were better than Genesis and SNES.

What seems to be the issue is that once a game company makes a product, they’re preoccupied with their next. They don’t spend time on making things better anymore. With computers, there are constant updates to games.

TLDR. PC Master race.

I don’t know… Tomb raider anniversary? Does that count considering it’s a remake? Guardian of light certainly doesn’t count since it’s even more removed from traditional tomb raider gameplay than the new one

One thing other than the lack of puzzles that bugged me was the fact that it was, as you said, “open world” but not really. Also the fact that survival elements were bare bones as hell. I think the game could have benefited from at least a hunger bar and some more hunting areas. Like mgs3 maybe. Still, like I said, the combat is superb. And once you unlock the melee attacks? Mwah! Delicious. The fight with || platoon of freaking samurai|| was great!

As far as duke nukem goes, yeah, I could see how the hive could bother someone. Although to be fair, the implication of that has been around since duke nukem 3d, it’s just that you only ever see it in full force in forever.

Another thing about it that I like about it that people disliked is the downtime between the action. The strip club, the arcade, the duke museum and messing around in the duke cave. Same goes for bioshock infinite. Some of the best parts are when you’re just going around taking in the sights. Really those are my favorite parts of story driven first person shooters. Like the beginnings of the half life games, prey and doom 3.

Also, that reminds me of how in system shock 2 you can find a game system and cartridges for it and they’re all their own little games. I don’t understand why more games don’t do that. It’s so cool.

…probably because they’ve relegated stuff like that to game models like “Playstation Home.” * facepalm *

But yeah, and maybe this is just me, but I liked how you could talk to people at different points in Sonic Adventure and they’d actually have their own subplots unfolding.

…in fact, for that matter, I liked how you’re getting pieces of the games story from the point of view of whichever character you’re currently playing as (there was even bias…sorta).

Y’know, I like episodic games because they get you your games sooner but…damn the wait is painful. Especially when the developer is behind schedules.

And people still wonder why me and the likes of the Retake Mass Effect movement are still angry at Bioware. Things like this make me sincerely wish that Dragon Age Inquisition tanks, and takes Bioware with it.

I’ve mostly reached the point of apathy on ME3’s endings but that right there is a perfect example of something else that infuriates me, people who assume that there is some sort of magical critic school or some shit you have to go to before your criticism becomes valid.

(“Your a critic Harry,” “what kind? Book? Film? Architecture?” “Video game, so basically the opposite of a journalist.”)

Yes. I know there are flaming idiots out there who will live of up to the stereotype of the shrieking, never satisfied fan. These people can be safely ignored as they only want attention, however when reasonable people give you criticism that is reasonable and well articulated and never once resorts to homophobic slurs then it is probably cause for a little self reflection.

Ultimately I’ve gotten enough distance between myself and the ME3 ending that while I still loathe it to my core, I can’t quite be worked up enough to care anymore. Ultimately Dragon Age: Inquisition will either be the final strike or at least some begrudging redemption. I will not however preorder it, or any future Bioware titles until I’ve seen a few reviews from people who don’t review games professionally.

Corrupter of the pure
Why is it that companies only seem to know how to shoot themselves in the foot?. . . seriously.

What I mean by this is that for some reason when it comes to PR or such all companies really seem to know how to do is constantly fuck up their potential consumer base and such.

A prime example of this is when it comes to trademark and such. “Fans want to make a fan game? Fuck them! Who cares about retaining our consumer base? Money money money!” or “Fans want to make fan content or fan songs? Fuck them! Who cares about retaining our consumer base? Money money money!”

Here’s the immediate problem with how companies try to retain high amounts of consumers when it comes to mass media, if you’ve ran off your consumer base then how do you expect to turn a profit? Is there a magical money tree that you rattle once in a while that drops the money out of no where? Do you put a tooth under your pillow and hundreds of thousands of dollars magically appear during the night?

If you want to retain your consumer base for long after you stop making your content then allow them to make fan content to their heart’s content and don’t you fucking dare give me that, “blah blah copyright” bullcrap; if you want money then find a work around to allow people to make fan content.

I know I talk way too much about touhou, but look at them; the only official content is a couple games and a couple manga, not even a anime or anything and look how popular they are. Why is it so successful financially? Cause zun encourages consumers.

If you actively encourage your consumer base to be actively engaged then years after you’re consumer base is still going to be loyal to you, but on the flip side if you treat them like utter garbage the second you stop making new content *click dead, you’re products are officially sales wise dead dead dead deader than a dead guy.
