College is overrated. Reminds me of my senior year in high school and how they practically gave me all sorts of papers about which college to choose to apply for as if it was mandatory to go to college. If I could do it all over again, I would’ve told all those school staffers to fuck off.

It is sad. I had the same ordeal happen to me in 2002 when I got ready to graduate HS. They shove the papers in your face, and these people try to “counsel” you. It’s more like pressure you into college. The worst thing that comes to mind is the BS “You got to School to get your diploma. You go to College to get your degree. You get your degree to get a job.”
 
They act like a college degree is Willy Wonka’s F’ing ticket to the job factory that’ll set you up for life. Bull. SHIT!
 
I ended up with 7+yrs of unemployment cause the housing market screwed everything over and the market changed. They wanted people with experience. They didn’t want degrees. I’ve given up on myself. I’m worthless. I know it. What I fear for are the people behind me. I’m talking the kids in Elementary and Middle School right now that have this shit shoveled down their throat like I did back in the 80s and 90s.
 
There’s nothing wrong with college. It can get you a decent job, however, it’s not the only choice. Not to mention, these kids need the resources to help them figure out a plan vs. having one thrust on them.
 
It won’t change though. None of it does. Just sit back and enjoy the ride till the shit hits the fan. I’d say we’re about 5 to 15yrs away from it happening, or, perhaps, even sooner than that if I had to wager.

All I want to do is get an entry level job, but my boomer parent wants me to go to college and then go into a career in computers.
 
I don’t want a white collar career or anything that requires a college degree.

I had the opportunity to go to college and have it all paid for. I decided not to because public school left such a bad impression on me; it was basically like a prison and I was so happy to graduate and finally be free.
 
Why would I want to go through that all over again?
 
Well now over 10 years later, I’m kicking myself for not having gone to college and am trying like mad to make up for lost time.

The last thing I want to do right now is to go to college and have to deal with that on top of all the other issues I’m dealing with…

Listen here. What the fuck do you have going on in your life that could be more important? I can understand not wanting to go to college, but at least admit that that’s why you won’t go. And if you don’t, know what you’re getting yourself into.

Fair enough. Sometimes college isn’t the right choice. It depends on the person, your career and sadly of course your bank account.

I love my university. (I refuse to insult it by calling it a “college.”) The friends I’ve made here are the best I’ve ever had, and that’s before the amazing intellectual experience that is learning from leaders of their fields. And then there’s the social life! I don’t do parties, but even still it’s amazing! That said, I understand why some people don’t want to go.

I don’t have high aspirations for my life. I guess I’ve accepted the fact that I’m probably destined for a blue collar life, and I’m okay with it.

Hey at least you aren’t stressed. I have very high aspirations and as such have just about gone to pieces trying to achieve them. If you want a simple life and not have to deal with student debt then by all means, go blue collar. If I may, I would suggest getting into trucking. There are always trucking jobs and the pay can be quite good, like 50k a year starting pay good. You have to be willing to be away from home for several weeks and deal with sleeping in the back of a truck, not to mention aggressive drivers.

Never been behind the wheel of an actual car for very long, and sheer knowledge of the many factors involved with large trucks gives me conniptions.

Some of you go to college to get a degree for a better job, others want to get smarter or have high aspirations. Just don’t do the same mistake I’m doing and going to college to get a degree that I don’t care about, to get a job I don’t care about.
 
I don’t really get much of a choice on this matter. I’m fully financed by the government through scholarships, and my parents can’t afford to provide me with better education. If getting a better job would ease up on their hardships, then so be it. I owe them a lot.
 
In the end, I’m here in Germany taking an engineering course, when I’d prefer to go to a local art school taking an animations course.

Lotta money in engineering. Perhaps when you’ve saved enough to retire you can still pursue animation.

Exactly. I plan on learning animation at some point in my life, just not now. Not until I’m financially stable.
