Just draw the OC yourself (either on paper or inside a program like Krita). You don’t need a generator program (imagine using a pony creator that limits your options). Though from my experience, I don’t think having an OC is worth it. Do you really need one?

Do NOT use black in the colour-scheme! Especially not for the fur. It almost always looks terrible.
Hell, even Nightmare Moon isn’t actually black. I remember examining screenshots from season one and found she’s actually a very dark green.
Save the black for lineart and the pupils of the eyes.

Also, if you want some tips on how to make a good OC, here are a couple:
  1. Do NOT make your OC an alicorn. There are only five of them (six if you count Sunny Starscout), we don’t need anymore, especially if it’s just a normal pony. Try not to make your OC look more important than it actually is (and OCs are not important).
  2. Your OC should have both good and bad qualities. Don’t make your OC a pure good hero with no bad qualities at all. That’s just unrealistic. Don’t make your OC overly villainous either (this was a big problem with my old OC, but at least he stood out from other OCs since a lot of them are mary sues or alicorns with no bad qualities at all).

I checked NMM’s color on >>380908 and she’s actually some very dark washed cyan (RGB 9, 15, 20), but it probably changes from a scene to another, thus we can as well assume it’s black. It can work when coupled with the right colors, this is just tricky.
What’s happening with a lot of OCs is they’re using black with saturated red or green and of course, the result looks bad.
Show-accurate style has problems with pure black because it actually appears as what it is - pure black ; with more realistic lighting, black can lead to pretty results

The differences between your findings and mine could be down to the specific video files used for the screenshots we looked at as well.
I assume the “pretty results” that can go with more realistic lighting refers to specular highlights? If my memory of graphics programming serves, those get their colour entirely from the light source, with brightness determined by surface roughness and angle of incidence.

It’s a bit like that, diffuse light contributions (direct / environment lighting) simply disappear on black surfaces, leaving only reflection-based contributions, whose specular highlights are a part of (it’s environment reflections, but simplified to only bright/punctual light sources)
Fresnel, aka objects becoming more reflective when seen tangentially, becomes very noticeable too, and is an important contribution as it fills the role of defining the shapes, just like lineart was supposed to do

I know this is an old thread, but it’s an interesting topic.
When I made my first OC in 2017, I used Pony Town to get an idea down and then begged others to draw her to perfect her design. Then I decided to just take up drawing myself and had a workable ref a couple weeks later, no tablet needed. In retrospect, I don’t recommend pestering others for OC design help unless they’re a friend and you know they’d like to help. Regardless, there’s a lot of trial and error; even with more OCs now under my belt, it can still be a struggle for me.
As for design tips, take a look at other characters and take note of color saturation, contrast between colors, and such. Some colors certainly go better together than others. If you’re so inclined, there are tutorials and such out there. But do what feels right to you, even if it’s a big important alicorn OC (must all OCs be mundane?), before making sure you check boxes of design rules.

Some color combos work better than others. I’m really not an expert here, so I can’t tell you, but you can search around for color theory and character design tips if you’re interested.

hi there
tho i myself find such stuff like pony creators very restricting in this matter, i would highly recommend implement “storytelling” details in design of your character. scars, sunburnt hair, glasses, hats, etc - all this can give anyone seeing the design clues of the characters lifestyle and vibe. if you are going for something more complicated than just a pretty looking design, of course.
and in any way, there are a lot of sites that can be helpful with finding good color scheme or customising them accordingly to your wishes, you can google “color scheme generator” and try playing with them for inspiration.
i personally love creating differents designs, but the most important stuff for me is to find balance between light and dark colors (i tend to use lighter main colors with darker/more vivid accents, or vise versa). i highly suggest avoiding using too bright and too dark colors tho, they are very tricky and its hard to make them work with different colors.
regardless, all above is just my opinion, the best way to make an OC is to make the one you yourself will like. my main char is kinda horrible if you look at them from the designer perspective and i ve heard, well, lets say, not very pleasant comments regarding this, but i love them how they are so i prefer not to give a quack about it x3 i suggest doing the same for everyone, at the end of the day you are creating your OWN char so there are no practical sense in other ppls opinions until you personally are satisfied with the result) hope this helps.
