You’d think I should know that, because I am a huge fan of funk music.
I wouldn’t rule out giving the album a try though. Obviously I owe it to my love of the genre (and some disco as well).

No. I’m talking 21st century Disco. That is what is really known as “Nu Disco”. You can find it in many places: The music of Daft Punk, Jamiroquai, Bag Raiders, and to a lesser extent Kylie Minogue and Dua Lipa. Just to name a few.

Contrary to the belief of some of you chart hounds, Disco never died for good.

Oh that, yeah I know about that I’m just talking about immediately after disco’s death in 1981.

I’m beginning to doubt this When We Were Young Festival not going the way as planned. Why? It’s 10 months away and there could be significant changes in the lineup due to undisclosed reasons, who knows what bad shit would happen to these musicians that would unfortunately cancel their involvement in this festival.

Okay, Disco as a whole did have a major lull in the rest of the 80s and through the 90s, post 1981. You’re right there.
Still, just like funk, it mutates every now and then

Funk would mutate into synthfunk which would then create new jack swing which would then mix with gangsta rap to make g-funk. So you got that right.

Some of those subgenres of funk have stuck around more than others though. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, but I haven’t heard any New Jack Swing in over 15 (or 20, rather) years. Electrofunk is still going strong though, and classic funk rock surfaces sometimes.

Every subgenre comes and goes while some stick around, that’s usually how it goes. Most importantly, there are those that doesn’t die per se, just that they stop becoming mainstream and popular. For example, prog rock is still being made but it isn’t the cultural powerhouse it was back in the 70’s, same thing with punk rock despite people saying that “punk is dead”.

Same thing applies with funk. New jack swing stopped being popular by the time gangsta rap and R&B became the dominant genre for the urban crowd, though I don’t know if it’s still being made cause I haven’t checked. Funk is far from dead judging by Silk Sonic’s debut album getting all the praise last year.

Though New Jack Swing I think reminds a creature of the moment.
Maybe Bruno Mars (speaking of Silk Sonic) might’ve incorporated elements of it though. Whatever. Even if NJS hasn’t made a comeback, I’m not crazy about it. Though whether it’s “alive” or “dead”, that shouldn’t stop us from enjoying it.

When it comes to Off the Wall, i’d add I Can’t Help It and Working Day and Night too.
