I hold respect for G1 and it’s shows. They had some neat ideas, a few genuinely funny moments, and you can tell they did put some effort into it. Plus it made way for the excellent FIM
 
G3 and 3.5…I swear at that point Hasbro threw their hands in the air and said “Fuck it! Little girls will buy anything!”

I’m not too keen on G3.5, but I like G1-G3 a lot.

I heard G3,3.5 got so out of control that even girls cringed to it.

It depends on who you ask, really. The G3 stuff, at least, had some interesting mythos.

Watching previous generations is fun, especially while imbibing liberally. G1 and G2 are decent enough that I would view them sober, and certainly not worthy of all the hate some FiM fans hurl at them. On the other hand, I find it more difficult to partake in G3.

I don’t really understand the G3 hate (not to be confused with the G3.5 hate), since it feels much more similar to G4 than G1 does. G1 just feels pretty generic.

I’m looking to start watching the previous gens and mining them for fanfic ideas, characters, and shout-outs. I’ve seen “Rescue from Midnight Castle” and the movie (the one with the Smooze). Any suggestions on where to start?

G2 had some comics and a video game, called MLP Friendship Gardens. G1 had the show, comics, Tales, and the two TV specials and movie. G3-G3.5 have direct to dvd movies, comics, and shorts.

“Bright Lights” has some neat moments and two enjoyable songs, “The Return of Tambelon”, “The Magic Coins”, and “The quest of the Princess Ponies” are also good starting points. if youre searching for slightly more complex villains, then i suggest “Escape from Cathrina”. these are all multi part episodes, one part lasting about 10 minutes

Had a realization about The Runaway Rainbow. The loss of rainbows may not seem that big a deal—until you remember Sweetberry said rainbowberries grow only after the first rainbow of the season. Rarity unknowingly put Ponyville’s food supply in jeopardy!

I think the only things salvageable in their entirety from G1 are the villains. Grogar I believe needs no introduction, and for as washed out as his color scheme was Tirek was also very awesome. Scorpan is the only villain in MLPFIM who actually was intended to be interesting, having an actual Face Heel Turn as part of his narrative. Katrina COULD have been more interesting in the right hands, and Lavan was also kind of cool. Nastina and her daughters can be tossed in the garbage, but the Smooze was cool in a “mindless nuclear chaos” kind of way.
 
I also believe they need to bring back the Sea Ponies (as an analogue to mermaids) and Flutterponies (as an analogue to High Elves/Eldar), and maybe bring the Bushwoolies along so long as they are treated like shit (as an analogue to Fluffy Ponies. XD)

Last night I dreamt about a magical girl anime where the girls turned into ponies, in the G3 style. They retained hair colors and clothes, and their symbols were based on their interests.

I have a question: what constitutes as G2? At first I thought it was Tales, but I’ve heard people saying that it’s still G1, and that G2 was only a toy-line, with no animated show. Is that correct?

That’s correct, yes. As was said in response to romantiCaveman, G2 wasn’t only toys, but there wasn’t an animated television show specifically. Tales is slightly closer to G1 proper than G3.5 is to G3, in that it actually used the same character designs, but doesn’t get called G1.5 for whatever reason. Maybe because the show had its own name and G3.5 was a little more discontinuous.

I really only liked a few of the ideas from G1. Mainly the villains and a few of the designs. It hasn’t aged well though, it’s more memorable as a “soooo 80s” thing like Jem or He-Man than it is as an actually timeless design. It’s not.
 
Plus, the way that they would have ponies walk on two legs and hold pencils with their “hands” was incredibly creepy.
