The pop star Sia has made a movie called
Music about an autistic girl that horribly misses the mark in many ways. It features strobing sequences that can overstimulate people and trigger people with photosensitive epilepsy, a condition common among those with autism; it has numerous scenes of the titular character, Music, being placed into prone restraint, which can actually kill people; and to top it off, Sia consulted Autism Speaks when creating the movie.
The problem is, however, that this isn’t an isolated incident but a circumstance of a larger problem. There are many,
many “inspirational” movies, shows, books, etc. about autistic people written by neurodivergent people and without consulting actual autistic people before creating them, and year after year they keep getting praised. I just want this to stop.
