It depends.
I’ve watched 19 episodes in Kill la Kill for the heck of it. At that point, I had the impresion that I was wasting my time.
If someone recommends me anime, I’d prefer anime with very good first episodes, because the first episodes of other series weren’t enough.
I watched one episode of One Punch Man and I dropped it. I watched one episode of My Hero Academia and I didn’t root for the kid. I watched one episode of Sword Art Online and I didn’t like it.
If a producer wants me to keep watching an anime series, make sure the first episode is actually good. I don’t care for the “3 episodes” rule. I’ve wasted so much time with Kill la Kill (and handling a very annoying fanbase at the same time, I must add) that 3 episodes aren’t gonna be enough.
I just don’t like anime not respecting my time.

@Lord WyrmSpawN
In 19 episodes I’ve seen lots of underwhelming details. The classic shower sequence that repeats over and over again (just in case Love Hina wasn’t enough to satisfy your lust), lines that repeat over and over again, a person who ends up blind but he doesn’t because he now has a visor that makes him see anything, a mom who wants to fuck her daughter (WTF), the treason scene everyone saw it coming, the sister revelation everyone saw it coming…
At that point I thought it wasn’t worth of my time. I wanted to see something new, something different. Nobody likes to repeat themselves, everyone loves doing new stuff and experimenting with novelty.
@Meanlucario
What does that have to do with rpgs?

I think it’s more of the idealism it presents (save Star Wars, which is just mindless violence) that isn’t present on fantasy works like Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter (especially the latter).

How?! There is fighting in it, but calling it “just mindless violence” sounds like you only watched Order 66 of Revenge of the Sith and declared that all Star Wars movies is just as violent and nothing else. And you never defined your version of idealism.
