Yeah, at best its a meh for me. Many artists should have moved more to Deviantart, e621, Newgrounds and in some cases, built their own websites like Doxy did.

Making your villain a sexual harasser or even an outright rapist is an INCREDIBLY cheap way to emphasize how evil they are.

I can agree with that. Doesn’t help how rape is much more often than not there for the victim’s lover/family in stories than the victim themselves.

My least favorite scene in The Super Mario Bros. Movie was when Dennis Hopper’s character (he doesn’t resemble Bowser enough for me to call him that) sexually harasses Princess Daisy. It completely broke my immersion because it seemed completely uncalled for, especially in a movie ostensibly aimed at children. We already know that he’s an evil dictator, we don’t need any more reasons to dislike him. Instead of being disgusted by the character, it just made me disgusted at the director and screenwriters instead.

I unironically wish there was more porn of characters from previous Gens of MLP, especially Gen 1 and 1.5. There are plenty of characters I’d probably clop to if it weren’t for a lack of material.

On the other hand, I think its disingenuous to forbid certain topics from being explored in fiction. No matter how uncomfortable they may make us.
 
Sometimes that’s the point, and art needs to make us winch from time to time.

I don’t understand how people complain about someone getting killed off (Walking Dead, The Last of Us, etc.) and yet people complain about how nobody dies (Fairy Tail, pre-Infinity War MCU).
 
Either the character gets killed off or doesn’t get killed off, make up your goddamn minds!

Again, my reason is that it’s done to motivate the family/lover of the victim, rather than to explore the drama that comes with being a victim.

But recently I’ve encountered people that claim it shouldn’t even ever be used in fiction, at all. Which is absolutely idiot, and frankly counterproductive to the very purpose of fiction.

I blame how often it’s done/handled poorly as to why people think that way at this point.

I feel like I’d be much more invested in new Avatar material if it didn’t follow the Avatars.

I mean, it’s a vast and expansive world, so it seems a bit of a waste. Why keep making new material focused on the avatars–Aang, Korra, Kyoshi or otherwise–when it will just have us comparing it to the original gaang anyway?
 
Like for example, I would really love to see a Toph-focused solo show, and I’m by far not alone on this. Seriously, Bryke, get on that!

To bring back the Star Wars analogy, many universe events and status quos also revolve around the actions of the Skywalkers, but that doesn’t mean that they should be at the focus of every piece of Star Wars media–in fact, some of the better ones in recent memory didn’t. There are other characters and parts of the world to focus on, and again, it seems like a huge waste to only focus on one character, albeit in different incarnations.

Korra felt to me like it would always be compared to TLA no matter how hard it tried to be different, at that point the only thing you can do is completely change the formula so that no comparisons can be made

The problem is that Avatar is limited by being so titled. Star Wars could be about anyone, but at the end of the day, Avatar, especially series-wide, has to revolve around whoever has such a title.

Honestly, that was one of the things that annoyed me about the Legends EU, since everything post-Endor has to do with Skywalkers and their kin.

Exactly, and despite fans saying “it should be viewed as its own show,” by the basis of its format alone, it’s unavoidable that people will compare it to its predecessor. Not everything has to be large-scale battles over the fate of the world.

Not really, though. As Lucario said, the branding isn’t that important—particularly given that The Legend of Korra didn’t even officially have the Avatar prefix. So it’s clear that they have the ability to do this.

Why must we save the focus on other characters for fanfiction? Why not include it in canon? That’s what I say.
