That’s because the usual process for deciding what’s a slur has been tossed aside in favor of the whims of the chronically belligerent.
Honestly, I think that our society trying to suppress emotions at some point was needed, since we now have seen the harm it does. Humans aren’t bright enough to realized that messed up stuff is messed up without there being a few piles of dead bodies.
We tend not to really acknowledge shit until it gets bad. For example, antisemitism and eugenics were common concepts in the US up to (and sometime after) WWII revealed how bad it was.
It took a literal “pile of bodies” for us to really put two and two together. And some folk still haven’t done that math.
