It’s a real easy mod too.
Firstly you find this chip and cut that pin with nail scissors. That’s the little bastard that causes the blinking screen. It’s actually an anti-piracy feature, but it’s picky as hell, right? A bit of dust is all it takes to make the chip get a bad signal from the game and refuse to let it run. Cut that pin and no more blinking, plus you can play PAL and even Famicom games (With an adapter, mind you) in your NES.
Then I took it apart, removed the old connector, and used ribbon connector (the stuff used in old computers to connect drives to the motherboard) to solder the connections. All it took was patience and making sure I got it oriented right (See how I wrote “top” on it?)
There’s connections on both side of each board, so here’s the other side.
Then I folded it over and hot-glued it to the original slot (The one that presses down on a spring), and used a few drops of glue in the spring to hold it fast. It’s
almost identical to the original, you just don’t push the game down when you insert it.
I always wanted to mold a new case for it, but I never had the time or real interest so I just used mighty putty to fill the cracks in the case and voila. I don’t have a picture of soldering the new LED in, but it’s literally as simple as removing the old one and swapping it. Two pins, line up the right polarity, bada bing bada boom.
And that’s nothing. Check out the
Nintoaster. An NES inside of a toaster. And it’s real, too.
