I didn’t like Rise April either. And no, it has nothing to do with the race swap.

She was basically April in name only. In other entries, she was always one of the more level-headed ones, usually being the foil to the turtles’ eccentricities at first before basically becoming a big sister to them.

Here? She basically just acts Mikey from the 2012 series, only worse. Even as the show got better, and even as other characters developed, she always remained a rather annoying and underdeveloped character.

I got nothing against Rise Casey though. She’s actually pretty cool.

That’s because they never give characters like these any development. Their skin-deep features are just supposed to be enough, which comes off as shallow and pretty condescending to those that supposed to be “representation” for. I remember Baxter Stockman from the 2003 show and how Shredder just butchered him. It was nuts! And though it all, he still stayed on with the Foot despite knowing another failure puts him in a wheelchair, then a body bag. Dude had conviction. Couldn’t do that today.

You have a recent disaster of MOTU with Terrific Teela. Teela in name only and she acts like a spoiled brat until the end. In fact she’s far worse when you really look at it. She wasn’t angry that Adem, the weakling goof that she was able to push around saved the day - she was enraged he was a better person then her who sacrificed himself and as so humble to keep a secret that would have made given him so much fame from the Kingdom and adoration from his Father. What does she do the moment she sees Adam? She glares at him She was an abuser. Plan and simple and they can’t walk that back.

Not only that, but you had the showrunners talking down fans they’re supposedly for, because they didn’t like the swapping either on characters. Why couldn’t they have used Sunman and that line of characters? If they really cared, they could have asked to put those characters in since Mattel had to have started production of those for PowerCon and would have been good promotion hadn’t the entire thing not be to SUBVERT EXPECTATIONS! in stead they did the most laziest AND cheapest way possible. Such heroes.

If you don’t like Rise April, that’s fine. We all have our preferences. However, saying she’s a Mary Sue, underdeveloped, and in the same league as Teela from MOTUR or 2012 Mikey (of all characters) is so far from the truth I can’t even laugh. Outside of the Turtles and Splinter, she doesn’t have many friends. In fact she’s considered a weirdo/weirdness magnet due to all the strange crap happening around her, and she can’t even hold down a part time job. The Turtles still consider her as a big sis/a part of the family and she still acts as a straight man to the Turtles. She’s sassy, fun, I love how she isn’t afraid to throw down, she isn’t a constant damsel in distress, and I adore the relationship she has with the group.

Recently, Mann of a Thousand Thoughts did a review of the series, and I’m just gonna leave it here. He gives a proper critique on the series, addresses the issues fans have with it and what people get wrong about it.

Never said she was the same league as Teela, that was just another example of completely changing a character. When I say that small clip of her pummeling a squad of foot clan single-handed, that was a big red flag - plus her and Kurai are just instant besties with no conflict in that show and seem to usually save the day. It’s not only April, but everyone in that show is so different. I could probably say something like “This characters a bit of a goof, but has a good heart” and no one would know which one that is because they are ALL like that. Everyone’s just a bland mush of safe tropes, that they all lost their personalities. It’s easier to tell which one is talking from the old Black and White comics then Rise.

I mean, to be fair, that’s only really the case for the first 10 or so episodes. They start developing into more distinct characters afterwards.

Defeating some Foot Soldiers isn’t some high bar, honestly. The characters in the series do have their own personalities, it’s just they aren’t stuck in their own box of “I’m The Leader/ The Tough Guy/ The Tech Guy/The Party Dude/etc”. They’re acting their own age…y’know Teenagers.

Yeah, trying to watch the series legally was challenging since some episodes weren’t On Demand. It’s a good thing some of the S1 episodes were available to check out at the local library.

Not to mention that most of Season 2 was done via 2 new episodes airing on the first weekend of every month. It was VERY confusing and poorly scheduled.
