I've watched a lot of old ecchi OVAs (direct to VHS releases in the context of this era) from the '80s and '90s and so on. Outlanders, Dream Hunter Rem, et cetera. If you're dead set against fanservice, that's the era to look towards because stuff that had to be OVA exclusive because of sexual content back then is tamer than something like Fire Force today. Almost every ecchi OVA I've seen from those decades - 'cept some exceptions like Golden Boy, Jungle de Ikou and Buttobi-CPU!!! - probably would not be called ecchi through a modern lens. It's just not erotic enough. Sex appeal isn't highlighted and put into focus enough to warrant the label outside of historical context.

Graaaaaanted, this isn't as much of an era thing or industry change (every newblood loves to act like this is a result of otaku pandering cuz $$$, which if any of you want to argue that to me I'm way more than happy to go toe-to-toe, no shitposting with you) as much as it is because of Japanese broadcast stations becoming progressively more and more lenient with allowing sexual content to be broadcast. With manga, you can go look at some shit Go Nagai made in the '60s and it would hold up today. TV broadcast stations have always been more reserved with what they're willing to air and this is something you can find globally, not just a Japan thing.

But yeah. On one hand, fanservice in a modern sense is way less prominent than people act like. If it was that prominent I'd be ecstatic, but alas. On the other, even the actual ecchi stuff of the '80s and '90s rarely gets on the same level as modern battle shounen anime, let alone true blue ecchi.

If some non-ecchi Isekai shit from this year is too lewd for you yet you want to try to get into anime still, going backwards and looking at older shit is always an option and probably your best one at that. I can help people get on private trackers if you want really obscure old shit you won't find on 9anime or wherever, too, so long as you're willing to pull your weight seeding. Old shit is dope.

Also, pet peeve, but hentai is porn. Ecchi is standard anime that heavily incorporates sexualization. Most people masturbate to hentai, and most don't to ecchi. It's not an equivalent replacement. Hate it when people say shit like "I'll just go watch hentai" or evenmuch much worse, "Why do you watch ecchi when you could watch hentai instead?" Not the same thing and you don't interact with them in the same way. Reducing things down to this porn/not porn dichotomy is just myopic. What if someone wants that crossbreed between Isekai and erotic content, or comedy and erotic content, not to masturbate to but because tits and swords or romcom bullshit or whatever else are just a dope ass combo?

On the other, even the actual ecchi stuff of the '80s and '90s rarely gets on the same level as modern battle shounen anime, let alone true blue ecchi.

If some non-ecchi Isekai shit from this year is too lewd for you yet you want to try to get into anime still, going backwards and looking at older shit is always an option and probably your best one at that. I can help people get on private trackers if you want really obscure old shit you won't find on 9anime or wherever, too, so long as you're willing to pull your weight seeding. Old shit canis be dope in its own way.

I watch a lot of old ecchi OVAs (direct to video releases) from the '80s and '90s and so on.

Graaaaaanted, this isn't as much of an era thing or industry change (every newblood loves to act like this is a result of otaku pandering cuz $$$, which if any of you want to argue that to me I'm way more than happy to go toe-to-toe, no shitposting with you) as much as because of Japanese broadcast stations becoming progressively more and more lenient with allowing sexual content to be broadcast. With manga, you can go look at some shit Go Nagai made in the '60s and it would hold up today.
