Pistol and revolver caliburs play a bit of a role in that. Most video game revolvers tend to be the more powerful caliburs like .357 magnum, .44 magnum, etc. Pistols are usually either 9mm or .45 ACP (but you'll occasionally see 5.7mm and .40 S&W.)
