As a side note, I’m sure most of you noticed me going on about Greg Tito before, well he’s made a half ass and late but still a gesture about the not investigating Wizardchan issuie.

While my earlier comments in this thread do represent my personal opinions on the matter of online harassment, my posts regarding the treatment of victims of abuse should not be perceived as the official policy of The Escapist.
 
The Escapist holds journalistic ethics extremely dear, and will always strive to honor them when reporting the news. After reviewing our story, “Depression Quest Dev Faces Harassment After Steam Submission,” I have determined that we do need to update the language to make it clear that we were reporting allegations made by the game developer in question which had not been verified by a third party. I accept full responsibility for the oversight, and apologize to the Escapist readership. I’ll be working with our senior editors to enact revised guidelines to help prevent situations like this from occurring again.
 
I will personally continue to try to reduce the amount of abuse I encounter on the internet by addressing it immediately and calling for the culprits to accept responsibility for their actions - as I have. Your comments on articles, on forum threads and on Twitter have consequences. The readers of the text you publish with a “Submit” button can experience real harm from what you write. Casual, anonymous hatred is a very real threat to the well-being of others, even if you don’t see those effects. In light of that, I ask all of you to treat people with respect.
 
I want to personally thank those of you in this thread who have been asking for abusive behavior on all sides to end. I applaud your efforts, as well as those of The Escapist forum moderators who have attempted to keep the discussion as civil as possible.

It’s SOMETHING at least which is what alot of us have been clamoring for, yeah I’ll watch it like a hawk to see if he does in fact change the article (be goddamn suicide if he didn’t with the readership at this point) but at least SOMEONE is admitting they did wrong in this whole goddamn mess and taking even half steps to do SOMETHING.
 
The wheels of progress were always going to turn slow on this one but now there’s some hope the rest of the news sites might actually do something.

I’d just like to point out that this sentiment right here is virtually identical to the one expressed by the overzealous Tumblr SJ bloggers that have been such a hot topic as of late. Food for thought.
 
Anyway, there have been a few new incidents come to light about this whole thing lately. Greg Tito of the Escapist has just made a forum post saying that he’ll edit the story about Zoe Quinn’s harassment to make it clearer that the allegations were not verified by a third party, and Jim Sterling has also released a statement saying that he’ll cover the issue in a later video when emotions aren’t running nearly as high.

No, I’m pointing out that two wrongs do not make a right. If anything, I’d say that you’re the one who’s ignoring the fact that her detractors are not entirely blameless themselves.
 
And that’s the problem here. Everyone is always so quick to jump on the “you’re either with us or against us” bandwagon. People are quick to demonize one side while refusing to accept that their own side is capable of further wrongdoing.

All that said, if my wording or choice of visuals ever led to the wrong aggressors being believed, and if anything I’ve done has led to individuals being wrongly harassed, I’m sorry for that. These situations are messy, and as I’m learning all the time, waiting for a while before jumping on board is increasingly valuable. I’ve been taking steps already to be more careful about that as far as Jimquisition goes, and will continue to do so.”

But I’m saying you need to stop trying to sweep any and all allegations under the carpet against her as “harassment”. The fact remains that she illegally filed false DMCA and illegally took down websites under false copyright claims which are very real crimes. To say that any and all allegations against her are void because people are not being civil is cherry picking information of the allegations against her to invalidate any and all criticisms is a red herring to which no single person is that stupid to fall for.
 
The issue here isn’t her sexual relations nor is it how people are reacting; it is about the illegal suppression of information and the subsequent attacks against the game jam by Quinn while at the same time pulling the victim card. She is not the victim; she is the aggressor and perpetrator of the attacks and any and all attempts at derailing the topic into “she’s being oppressed” is a red herring meant to dissuade the topic.
 
Let’s get something straight here; no one here is that stupid as to fall for your red herring.

No, it really is no different.
 
Firstly, there really is no clear or defined goal. I can’t really imagine what any of the harassment stuff will accomplish. It’s not going to get her to change her mind (that much should be obvious by now), and it’s certainly not going to make the people committing the act look any better.
 
Secondly, even though there is proof, it’s still not justified. Many Tumblr SJ bloggers will frequently cite screencaps of some wrongdoing and then use it as an excuse to launch some kind of extended harassment campaign.

Jail time aside, with The Escapist at least making slow motions towards acknowledging their part in their whole fiasco, does anyone here think there is a slight chance that other news sites might do the same? I’d heard scuttlebutt that Forbe’s was going to publish an article on the whole deal but that was it.
