40% of German 14 year olds don’t know what Auschwitz was. And 30% of students over 17 didn’t know what it’s function was.
Sad but true. Whereby, if you turn the numbers around, it looks (almost) better again: 60% of the German 14 year olds know what Auschwitz is. 70% of students over 17 also know its function. In my experience, from the age of 18 at the latest, everyone really knows what Auschitz is all about. A terrible crime against humanity. Except those who don’t want to know for political and ideological reasons.
But yeah, it is really disturbing.
The Forsa/Körber survey was before the Corona crisis in 2017/19. The situation has certainly not improved since then. Well, at least the students don’t even bear much responsibility for this mess. The reason lies in the completely outdated, underfunded and chaotic federal education system that we Germans unfortunately have.
History lessons are more and more combined with politics and social studies, but then not necessarily taught by the appropriate pedagogical specialists. A politics or social studies teacher has not received the same training as a history teacher. But since the states always wants to save money, there are no continuing education courses, no digital material, and certainly no school trips to Ausschwitz. Some teachers are also afraid of not approaching the subject sensitively enough. Basically, schools are once again being left out in the cold by their state governments.
By the way, Wikipedia says the following on the subject:
In 2017 a Körber Foundation survey found that 40 percent of 14-year-olds in Germany did not know what Auschwitz was. A 2018 survey organized in the United States by the Claims Conference, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and others found that 66 percent of the American millennials who were surveyed (and 41 percent of all U.S. adults) did not know what Auschwitz was. In 2019, a survey of 1,100 Canadians found that 49 percent of them could not name any of the Nazi camps which were located in German-occupied Europe.
As I said before, it’s fucking sad.
