Teachers are paid like shit, they have to deal with the two worst demographics on the planet (shitty kids
and shitty parents), and in recent years what they can even teach has been hyper politicized, with many states making it a crime to teach “divisive concepts” (up to whoever to decide what “divisive” means), or instead forced to teach “both sides” of every “divisive” issue (including, say, “both sides” of evolution/creationism or holocaust/holocaust denial…), and some other absurd new requirements.
Oh, and it’s also one of the few jobs where after your 8 hours, you still have to do homework (grading homework and exams), and the myth that teachers get summer off is wrong, given they need to spend the summer learning and preparing for the next school year.
Basically, it’s one of the lowest paying jobs in the US, one of the most stressful and demanding, one of the least rewarding, and now it’s become a focal point for petty politics and angry politicians with nation-reaching bullhorns. So yeah, there’s a shortage.
I wouldn’t put up with such a shit job for less than a 300k USD yearly salary, and I don’t think I’d last the full year.
