They certainly have a lot of atmosphere for one thing. And there was a lot of involvement.

I much preferred the slower fights of the original trilogy. They had less flash and more substance.

The prequels, from what I’ve gathered over the years, were just good movies that weren’t given the proper treatment they rightfully deserved.
 
Which is why people are so hotly contested over them.  
We wanted the epic backstory of Anakin Skywalker the Fallen Jedi Hero, and we kinda got something that seemed like it, and something that wasn’t quite up to snuff.
 
I blame misguided writing and direction, not really BAD writing and direction, for the problems with the prequel films.
 
I’ll say that I really enjoy what they were trying to go for, rather than what they actually did. On paper, the prequel films are actually pretty damn brilliant and amazing. Which is why I seem mostly passive-aggressive towards most of the movie’s problems.
 
But that doesn’t mean I don’t have any actually problems with them. I just don’t tend to dwell too much upon them unless I have something specific to talk about:
 
To name one complaint about the prequels, this event in particular has driven me crazy for years. Even as a kid, I could tell how utter nonsensical and ridiculous it totally was:
 
Padme’s death.  
Or rather, HOW she dies.

EVEN MIDI-CHLORIANS MAKE SENSE COMPARED TO HOW THAT EVEN HAPPENED

I honestly blame some of that on them trying to be something different than what the public was expecting, too.
 
But mostly bad direction. Like they essentially Shyamalized Samuel L. Jackson. How do you go from “I HAVE HAD IT WITH THESE MOTHERFUCKING SNAKES ON THIS MOTHERFUCKING TRAIN!” to “The… SITH has… lost.”
 
And do not get me started on Padme’s death. I honestly think they originally wanted her to die from injuries from being choked by Vader, then for whatever reason they wussed out and changed their minds. Either that or they were somehow trying to be poetic, like “ooooh it’s such a tragedy he fell that it actually killed her whoooooo 2spooky4u”.

Seriously though. Imagine if Mace Windu had gone full Jackson in that role. “GET THAT LIGHTSABER OUT MOTHERFUCKER SO I CAN JAM IT UP YOUR SITH ASS!”
 
I don’t know if that would have been good or bad overall, but damn that would have been entertaining.

I think it’s very telling that the Clone Wars cartoon managed to do most of the ideas of the prequels right, kept most of the characters largely the same, and turned out excellent despite those things by virtue of good direction, good characterization and much better dialogue.
 
Anakin’s transition to the dark side in particular and the decay of his relationship with Padme is really well done even manages to make the turn in Revenge of the Sith… not work, not completely, but it does show his faith in the order has been cometely destroyed by the time the movie happened and his relationship had become an unhealthy one kept together by codependency, which at least puts things in a better context.

That show had a great ending. Too bad Rebels didn’t keep the art style.

The Clone Wars cartoon was pretty damned good all across the board.

I think too, that because it was aimed at that much younger of an audience it kept it just at the point where it was allowed to have a definite edge and get away with some stuff, while still keeping it mostly lighthearted and fun.

It is pretty amazing how far Clone Wars was allowed to get with it’s violence, compared to most cartoons. Without even getting into the themes of the whole thing, people got shot in that show (and not just the faceless clones either) and they drop, and more then one person gets straight up executed or stabbed in the back, sometimes by our heroes.  
 
But really, would it have worked otherwise? This show would have bombed if they had to go the G.I. Joe route.

I’m glad they did. I think a younger audience can take a little edge, provided it doesn’t go too far. Especially with stuff like that pic, where all things considered it’s really not that gory.
 
I think that, and how imitatable the stunt is in real life, is a big deciding factor in whether it can be put into such a show. Using a gun or blade is much more taboo than a lightsaber or blaster because the latter don’t exist (and thus can’t be replicated), and like with Samurai Jack all manner of horrific violence was fine provided it happened to machines (even when their machine fluids mimicked gore almost perfectly).

Whether you like the prequels or not, they are necessary for the canon. They go deeper into the lore of Star Wars.
 
The Opera House scene in Revenge of the Sith is one of the best non-action scenes in the Star Wars franchise because it added its own inner mythology thus making the Star Wars universe deeper.

Maybe this will explain how Han got in with Jabba, met Chewie and got the Millenium Falcon from Lando.
 
But that just asks the question, who is gonna play the younger Han Solo?
 
Then again… I have one choice.

Ohh I love the star wars movies, I read almost all the novels and most of the comics of the old EU too. And I am hyped that they are making a new Trilogy and Spin-Off Movies and all the good stuff.  
Still I am still a bit bitter about the decision to reset the EU completely, they could have kept a few things in it. (Well they do technically, like Aliens, technology, designs, but I rather mean the stories and characters as a whole.) Haven’t bought anything of the new books or comics yet thought.
 
The new Rebels Serie is Ok, and I like it. You kinda see that the budged was cut and regulations with this show is a bit stricter. I think they are going to make it better the upcoming seasons. The Clone Wars wasn’t too good the first season either. The TV Movie for season 2 was great. Just one Name, Darth Vader.  
It was sad that they ended The Clone Wars so abruptly, they easily could have made a full season 6 (and 7) and even a final movie about it to close it up properly. Gladly we will have returning characters from TCW in Rebels, like Ahsoka and Captain Rex, and many other folks.
