While the hero’s plot armor did keep the Storm Troopers from doing much damage to them, I did like some of the little things we saw with them.
Getting to see them actually engage and take out a few settlements was good to see. As we can see them actually terrorizing people.
Their little skirmish at the beginning of the film and then us seeing them perform bombing runs and aerial attacks before sending in ground troops like at the bar at least showed them being professional.
And we got to see a bit more personality with them. With some having specialized weapons, or hearing them shout orders to eachother during the battles.
Plus, finding out how the First Order actually gets these troops and trains them was neat to find out. [I was wondering if the Empire had some sort of masterful PR campaign we never saw or something~]
So I appreciated those little touches and glimpses we saw. And since the movie isn’t focused on them, I felt it an appropriate amount of attention.
|| I agree on feeling a little iffy on Rey becoming
so good at things so quickly. I know the plot point is that she’s Super Duper strong in the force. But it still felt rather rushed.
Her picking up on flying the Falcon I could accept, given she was already familiar with mechanics and we’ve seen both Anakin and Luke pick up on flying extremely well.
But her so quickly picking up on the Mind Trick and Force Grab abilities [even just rushed, raw, and not actually skilled yet] felt like a bit
too much. I could understand her reversing the Mind Reading when she did since Kylo was actively doing it to her. So she could feel out what he was doing and just try and mentally reverse it.||
On a similar note: I did like how Finn was shown to not be experienced with several of the things he was trying to do. [Taking a ship gunner position] But he wasn’t stupid about it. I’m not quite sure I’m expressing myself properly here.
I liked that we saw him slowly progress in figuring these things out. First in the Tie-fighter where Boe tells him what to push and how to control the gun. Then in the Falcon he had a vague idea what he was supposed to do now. And so was able to figure it out after a bit of trial and error.
I was also REALLY happy they didn’t try the plot where he constantly tries to “protect” Rey because of some misguided hero feelings or because she’s a woman or anything. When he kept grabbing her hand I was afraid they’d go that route. But thankfully they moved past that without making it a big deal or a moment or anything.
