The whole AI debate is pretty complicated and some points about the abuse of it and using other people’s art are fair, but are we really blaming the AI, the tool itself, for doing all these? That’s like blaming a pen or a tablet for helping you draw the art, or a camera for capturing that scenery for you. I feel like that’s stupid enough to be on this thread.

I was pondering this actually. As a writing prompt tool it’s actually pretty incredible. Sure, I could just tweak the grammer and spelling, and dump it onto the internet as is. It would be wonky, but enough people would like it, and that’s the scary part. That AI can sort of just generate functional stories.
But note that I said “functional”. Not necessarily good. That’s where the human comes in. Using the ChatBot to get a framework, I can really modify it into something new. Add transitions, clean up the dialogue, add a setting and other story elements. And, boom, you have a good story.
How is that any different than basing a story on conversations you have with a friend? Or on any other interaction in one’s life?
Now, it would be unethical to not talk about the inspiration. So, artists with integrity should still preface their stories with “inspired by an AI prompt” or something to that effect.
