That second part is 100% because of the West. Ukrainian arms pre-aid were Soviet and Desert Storm era gear, with some western gear from the Iraqi Freedom days we sold them after Crimea. We've also been training them on and off since 2014.

And a good chunk of their tactical sophistication is due to western Intel.

The war would have been over in the first week were it not for advanced Intel from the US and UK that allowed Ukraine to reposition its command and control elements so that the initial Russian invasion did not wipe out their coms and logistics systems.


Look, I will never doubt the Ukrainian fighting spirit. They've done absolute wonders and are warriors through and through. Burt Steve is right, without western aid this war would have been lost hard. Russia, for all its extreme faults, is still massively more powerful in terms of military assets. It's been severely degraded now, and Ukraine has been so massively buffed that it is unlikely Russia will ever push past that river again...but it took the combined might of western aid and sanctions to get to that point.
