Of course, there are also various implied questions like “what is true democracy anyway, and is it even necessarily a good thing?”
Not really. As a center piece of government or even at the forefront of national image, as a representative of the nation: what are they representing? Democratic process has oft been considered important if because it means the capacity to represent the national will. And while they exist, serve as functionaries of the government, and take out an allowance from the government, what are they really doing?
