I disagree. Life is a lived experience through many perspectives. Human beings, I believe through evolution, are very groupish and get sucked into a tribal “us” vs “them” mindset. when we do get into this tribal mindset we cling more tightly to our groups moral matrix, and a basic principle of moral psychology is that “morality binds and blinds.” That what I see in or society today, we seem to go blind to arguments and information that challenge our team’s narrative.

It’s funny how the GOP claim they’ll “get the Government off our back”, but proceeds to do the exact opposite.

I can’t fathom what you even mean by ‘a civil war being around the corner’… Like is there a defined time when the politicians on either side of the capital building all throw aside their pens and notebooks like some kind of scene from a deranged comedy movie, in you mind? Is there an ultimatum, from your side, from the other? What would the goals be? How would it be fought? Where would the frontlines be? Who are the enemy, even?

Because let me tell you, I have my own vision for what I believe is a more or less realistic idea of what a new US civil war would look like, and it would be absolutely terrifying to you. And I believe that I’m right, because you are terrified.

The civil war is here, it’s been here for a while, people are fighting it, and everybody else either doesn’t see it, doesn’t care, likes the security net the US provides too much to care, or is sitting around grousing about it while at the same time doing nothing and letting other people do the fighting for them. And in the end, it will change absolutely nothing.

You want to fight the civil war, go fight it, just don’t expect me to bail you out of jail, I have more meaningful things to do with my money.

Biden apparently is displeased by the leaks of US intelligence that take credit for helping Ukraine sink Russia’s ship.

I can’t see any organized civil war between the states breaking out, even with polarization as bad at it is. More likely would be something similar to “The Troubles” in Northern Ireland.

I guess the idea is that you’re supposed to maintain plausible deniability on specific targets. Like, if we give Ukraine a whole bunch of intel and they happen to use it to blow up a Muscovite warship, that’s one thing. But if we’re curating that intel specifically to help them target the warship, that’s a bit more proactive on our part. And if we’re announcing that fact, well, that’s a direct slap in Putin’s face. Not that there’s a whole hell of a lot he can do about it short of nuclear winter.

Just one of the unwritten rules of proxy war, I guess.

Seriously, though, there’s nothing wrong with this bill. Family members of the other two branches are entitled to protection. The Secret Service protects the President’s family, of course, and Congressional families are protected by the Capitol Police, even when they’re not in the Capitol. And the Justices themselves are already protected by the Supreme Court Police and/or the U.S. Marshals, depending on their location.

As important as SCOTUS is, you wouldn’t want some dickweed taking Barrett’s kids hostage to compel a vote one way or the other, even if she does have spares.

I mean yeah. I don’t want harm to come to the SCOTUS.

But still, bad optics.

They are probably victims of his father’s brutal regime back in 1970s-80s when our country was under his martial law.

A cursory search told me that Marcos Sr. got precisely overthrown by a popular uprising following yet another attempt to rig the elections in his favor in 1986, and he and his family had to flee the country (to Hawaii, where he died three years later, which didn’t stop the rest from slinking back eventually and lying their way into regaining their former popularity over the course of the next three decades, as you can see).

In Russian news yesterday, two journalists posted dozens of anti-war and anti-Putin articles on the pro-Kremlin website Lenta.ru for which they were working, accompanied by a disclaimer requesting to take a screenshot before the contents got deleted (precising that their leadership didn’t approve them and the presidential administration was going to “rip them a new one”). Take note, Vlad, this is what true bravery looks like.
Also, the same day, someone hacked the online TV schedule to replace the name of every program with the following message: “On your hands is the blood of thousands of Ukrainians and their hundreds of murdered children. TV and the authorities are lying. No to war”. Well done.

Meanwhile in France, Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s decent showing in the presidential election (contrasting the paltry scores of the rest of the candidates — and Anne Hidalgo’s expectedly abysmal one for the so-called socialists in particular) is finally forcing the French left to get their shit together and strike an agreement to prepare a common list for the legislative election in June (it will be called the NUPES — roughly translated to preserve the acronym, the New Union of the People for Ecology and Society). Of course, some old-timers in the socialist party (such as its former head Jean-Christophe Cambadélis, who oversaw its cannibalization by the macronists five years ago) and ecologist party (such as former activists turned sellouts Daniel Cohn-Bendit and José Bové — living proofs that you should never get elected to the European parliament if you don’t want to lose your soul in the way) are now frothing at the mouth that their leadership would dare bowing down to Mélenchon thusly (failing to realize that this agreement is pretty much a lifeline that LFI is throwing at their drowning parties, now threatened with financial bankruptcy on top of the moral one for overspending in the presidential election, their underwhelming results denying them a refund of their campaign fees).
I’m pretty sure we can expect the mediatic Mélenchon-bashing to eclipse the Le Pen-bashing in the coming weeks.

The timing is still suspicious. The supreme court has been around for quite awhile, but is only now getting their families protected when a very controversial action is being taken.
