A reminder that one of the many voted was Lauren Boebert, who the day prior to the vote laughed at Biden as he talked about how his son died from exposure to one of those toxic pits.

I always default to the nonviolent option so I would say no, I disagree
The hypothetical does tickle a few funny bones in me (the ‘fuck white supremacists’ and ‘play stupid games…’ bones to be specific), but even then I think you shouldn’t be the one to escalate.

So tha ks to dumb FDA rules which prevent importation of European baby formula, the US was set up for disaster when domestic production was screwed up. The solution the federal government came to was to pass a bill… which gives the FDA more money. What a stupid response.
The plant that shut down was in February, had these bad regulations and tariffs not been in place their would be formula on the shelves, and the “solution” from Congress won’t do much to actually solve the problem
Background Pony #6B50
@Zincy
That was absolutely part of the problem, but the poor regulations would still remain. Both should be gotten rid of.

Trump’s tariff negotiations are only part of the problem. You can’t pin the regulatory issues on orange man as well here. This is a core issue we have to protect domestic producers at the cost of people.

Oh nah, Capitalism is the real bad guy here (as is everywhere else).
Trump’s tariffs left us with little means of acquiring formula elsewhere, but the biggest issue is
A) the pseudo-monopoly the handful of formula makers have in the country
B) those same pseudo-monopolies using their profits and Covid relief funds on stock buybacks instead of maintenance.
Lotta babies died from drinking contaminated formula, lotta babies are starving from the lack of any formula right now, and Republicans are likely gonna win a few extra seats thanks to gaslighting about this issue.
But hey, at least a few corporations got slightly richer for a bit right?

Tariffs and other protectionist measures go against the core principles of the free market.
If domestic producers cannot compete, they need to either get better or die. Relying on protectionism just encourages corporations to be lazy and skirt the rules of their home nations.
Tariffs are weapons, not policy, and should be reserved primarily for sanctions and such.

@Zincy
You should look at the video game industry. There are so many poorly made games that are highly monetized and overpriced, yet people will defend them tooth and nail, blaming the customers for complaining about the price increase rather at the corporations who nickle and dime them with letting their employees starve, lying about the reasons games cost so much

Capitalism is the real bad guy here
No, no it isn’t. Government tariffs and regulations are the bad guy here, these are anti-capitalistic policies. They are keeping formula out of parent’s hands. That psuedo monopoly you don’t like? That’s the result of state government actions through the WIC system which awards government contracts allowing these larger corporations to be protected from competition.
Like Zincy said, these are anti freemarket policies, they exist to protect the domestic manufacturing. Their are international companies with safe products that could and should be competing with them, but dumb policies are keeping them out.

What? Have you not done qny research on this? Their are regulations. A lot of them, they are actively keeping supply out of the country.

Capitalism does need some regulation, as a true 100% free market would be anarchy.
Those regulations however should focus on things like safety, environmental protection, workers rights, and anti-trust protections.
They are unfortunately a necessary evil to bring some good sense to the greed.
But when regulations allow for cronyism and protectionism, that is when they become problematic. Or when they are too odious, broad, or poorly planned.
Regulations should be measured well and balanced in order to prevent doing more harm than good.

In the latest Climate Change news, Italy’s longest river, the Po river, has dried up from a drought. It was an important source of fresh water for many farms, with it being reported to be responsible for 40% of Italy’s GDP. But the water level has dropped so low that seawater has begun to back up into the river.
Climate Change will change many facts about our ecosystem. Water flowing in the opposite direction was not one of those changes I expected, but here we are.

These companies are regulated, baby formula isn’t some unregulated do whatever you want production. And the tariffs have no reason now, the idea that “If the government was doing it’s job” is meaningless, it shouldn’t exist, period. Regulations can be perfectly fine, but they aren’t some objective good. Even ones with good intentions can cause problems, and when we see poor ones we should address them and fix the system. Trying to pin everything wrong on “capitalism bad” keeps the problems going.
