I have no idea what point you are trying to make.
Any legislation will provide definitions just like the old one did. Jurisprudence will work out the wibbly parts over time. Companies and special interest groups will throw as much money at it as they can to try to get their own special interests covered.
That’s how the United States does it. If you don’t live in the United States, then where you live probably does it a different way.
But the definitions used in the laws are in NO WAY as screwing and confusing as a lot of people are trying to make it sound.

Not true. East Germany, for example, was authoritarian, but most of the people imprisoned during its existence were actually far-right extremists. Gays and religious/ethnic minorities though were treated neither better or worse than they were in West Germany. And on top of that, the DDR was relatively non-interventionist and not warmongers like the Nazis were.

It is, when the state’s definition of “far-right extremism” is not so different from the one Putin’s Russia uses nowadays.
Also, Stasi was literally a rebranding of the Gestapo, methods and personnel included.

Nazi Germany claimed the lives of roughly ~50 million people during its 12-year existence. The USA during its involvement in WW2 imprisoned ~110,000 Japanese Americans and killed more than a million Japanese civilians, both through strategic firebombings and the two atomic bombings.
By contrast, estimates of East Germany’s body count vary between ~300 to ~1400, depending on sources and factors. But the main difference is that those deaths happened over a nearly 40 year time period, which means at most ~35 people would’ve died per year in the DDR. Compare that to the USA where nearly 21,000 Americans were murdered with guns in 2021 alone.
Long story short, East Germany killed far less people than the USA and Nazi Germany.

Nobody here was talking about Franco other than yourself, though. It was about how the injustices in East Germany were in no way comparable to Nazi Germany and the USA.
Oh, oh I’m sorry! I didn’t realize you had the power to dictate the range of discussion here! I guess only you’re allowed to introduce absurd comparison points to try to prop up your flawed concepts, my bad!

You know, trying to compare the total number of deaths in World War 2 to the number of people killed trying to flee East Germany (which, by the way, was on a 28-year period according to your sources, not 40) isn’t really improving your credibility here.
With that kind of logic, you could argue that North Korea isn’t even that bad compared to East Germany, since they have way less defectors who manage to escape.
Also, did you know the suicide rate in East Germany rose so high that the state stopped disclosing statistics about it altogether? Turns out the Stasi was subtle enough to content themselves with psychologically torturing people and using various means to ruin their lives rather than murdering them outright.
As bad as the FBI might’ve been during the Cold War, they simply couldn’t compete with them in that domain.

Here’s the thing though: In a situation where someone defends A over B and C, and you disagree with A, you don’t bring up D for the sake of knocking down A. For now this is in regards to A, B and C and then only afterwards can we debate D, E or F.
And yet you felt more than comfortable to slide in the US into this absurd nonsense out of nowhere. Curious how your own imaginary rules don’t apply to you.

The past several posts were discussing the USA, fascism and anti-communism. I simply threw in the fact that East Germany, while not optimal, wasn’t as horrid as Westerners commonly make it out to be.
@Ereiam
I’ve read many posts on Quora from people describing their personal living experiences in the DDR and it was nothing like what you just described. If it was so bad, why then did Angela Merkel’s family move from Hamburg to the DDR when she was little, where she would later become active in left-wing movements? She herself later described life in the DDR as “sometimes almost comfortable in a certain way, because there were some things one simply couldn’t influence.” Pretty nuanced if you ask me.
Also the DDR’s communism had little to do with peoples’ depression and suicides. In fact, South Korea is known to be very capitalist but it has a very high suicide rate.

“Mostly shit” by what standards, though? Even the worst parts of Germany are still more livable than the “best” parts of the USA. I would know because I’ve lived in and visited both countries.

If you had read the Wikipedia article you quoted more thoroughly, you’d know that Angela Merkel only joined said left-wing movement (the Freie Deutsche Jugeng, which was more or less the marxist-leninist equivalent of the Hitlerian Youths) because, while membership wasn’t mandatory, not volunteering to be a part of it made it difficult to access higher education.
In fact, while she was completing her studies, she was denied a position of assistant professor at an engineering school because she refused to become an informant for Stasi.
Hell, Stasi had on file her “political and ideological deviations” from communism and the GDR, and her support of Solidarność (not to mention that she’s been part of the christian-democratic movement from the very start of her political career after the reunification, so you’d be hard pressed to call her a “left-wing activist”).
The point is that yes, it was possible to live well in East Germany, provided you toed the party line. Drawing any kind of negative attention from the German version of Big Brother however could (and, more often than not, would) land you in a world of shit.
