I’m really frustrated with the DSA and its allies regarding the Ukraine War (and I say this as a dues-paying member). Their demands that the US and NATO stop supporting Ukraine in favor of vague, never-elaborated “diplomacy” are tone-deaf at best.

I mean yes, as a leftist I have my reservations about how NATO has been used in the past. Yes, the bourgeoisie in Russia and the West are sending the working class to fight this war. Yes, I agree with the “no war but class war” sentiment that the DSA wants.

But calls for NATO to unilaterally withdraw support from Ukraine, and indeed for the US to leave NATO, is not reading the room. They can shriek about how western corporate media is brainwashing voters into supporting western imperialism in Ukraine all they want, but the sad fact of the matter is that Putin is not going to bargain in good faith here, and they’re gambling on Russian leftists (what few remain) being able to topple Putin in a massive anti-war uprising (the war itself remains popular in Russia, with any discontent being directed at its execution).

Of course they do. And these fads aren’t always tech related. It’s because companies hope to gain market or efficiency by investing in the new thing early. They also fear that the new thing will take off without them, making them obsolete.

I assume intersex is about sex (your body), but bigender is about gender (who you consider yourself to be). And I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a mini-war of people arguing whether the word bigender should be replaced because it implies that there are two genders.

I get their distaste of NATO. Murica has a track record of using international organizations to legitimize its actions. But this is not the case now. Every country bordering Russia just wants to be free from Russian imperialism, but I guess freedom from imperialism is “Western imperialism” now. Or “Nazism”, as Russia calls it.

I emailed them about it, yes. Hundreds have cancelled their memberships over their initial statement.

I specifically mentioned calling, because emails and social media comments are less impactful. Getting ten phone calls is much harder to ignore than getting a hundred emails (or ten thousand template emails where just the signature differs).

At best, the heads of the DSA are up their own ass and need a good reality check. At worst? They’re being influenced indirectly by Russian propaganda because their brain is rotted by too much “West Bad” talking points.

You know it’s funny, because the DSA’s national leadership seems to be heavily influenced by the Marxist wing of the American Left (at least their international working group does, hence why they love Cuba and Venezuela and are so uncritical of authoritarian non-Western regimes), but at the same time Marxists hate the DSA because “they’re stealing all the energy and momentum that could be used toward Revolution(tm) in favor of electoralism in a system rigged to favor capital”

Like, they need to understand the left can walk and chew gum at the same time. Backing somewhat pro-worker candidates in elections - even if they’re ultimately subservient to capital - can at least make organizing for Revolution(tm) easier.
