And if I had to hazard a speculation on how Trump shall be viewed a century and a half from now, I wouldn’t bank on him being vindicated by history.
Honestly, if they aren’t consistently referring to him as one of the worst (if not the worst) presidents in all of American history within maybe 30 years of now, I’d be very surprised.

They already are: two separate studies from 2018, made by the American Political Science Association and the Siena College Research Institute, have respectively ranked him at 44th and 42nd place (above James Buchanan and Andrew Johnson).
The ones in the years following his presidency will probably be more significant, but I doubt he ever leaves the fourth quartile (unless his fifteen or so next successors are even worse somehow).

So his only competition was the guy who had a Civil War happen and perhaps the most racist/genocidal president in history.

Sounds about right.

Yeah, it’s awfully hard to beat a guy so bad that historians named an era after his time in office and the influence it had on the political worldview for years afterwards.

Although I’m not entirely unconvinced Trump won’t have the same affect in the end.

I’d say I doubt that could happen, but given how much the GOP still supports Trump at this point, I don’t think we can rule anything out.

I remember when Jorge was considered the worst president in US history, only for his reputation to be rehabilitated big time by liberals. Can’t wait for Trump’s reputation to be rehabilitated after he leaves office…

In 10 years Trump will tweet a pic of himself holding a handful of mashed potatoes & giving a thumbs up and some celeb will post like “I didn’t always agree with Trump but unlike president Logan Paul he had CLASS”

If nothing else, it really says a lot about the Trump presidency if people are missing the days when Bush was president, let alone Obama. Like, he was one of the worst presidents leaving office and he’s still is one of the worst now. Those two should absolutely not be the best we could settle with, this country really needs to hold a better standard than that

W’s still near the bottom of the third quartile ten years later. Not among the worst of the worst anymore, but still pretty close (even Tricky Dick and his replacement are seen in higher regards, not to mention Bill or Barack).

The 2-inch long Asian giant hornets have landed in the US for the first time, spotted on the west coast.
Multiple stings are deadly to humans and in their “slaughter phase” the hornets destroy honeybees, whose bodies they feed to their young.
Scientists are now on a hunt for the hornets, hoping to eradicate the species before they wipe out US bees.
Populations of honeybees and other pollinators in the US were already under pressure. Between 1947 and 2017, number of honeybee colonies in the US plummeted from 6 million to 2.5 million. And last year, researchers from the University of Maryland reported that 40% of the country’s honeybee colonies died in a single winter, between October 2018 and April 2019 - the largest loss of its kind.
Pollinators, most often honeybees, are responsible for one of every three bites of food taken in the US, and increase the country’s nation crop values every year by more than $15bn (£12bn), according to the US Department of Agriculture.

Yeah, it’s not like we can grow food in artificial environments or anything. Hell, it might even be possible to grow food in anaerobic environments, which would be nuts if it could be pulled off. It would certainly make growing food in space a lot easier.

Shifting even a single nations food supply to artificial growing would be a monumental challenge, and one that would simultaneously displace thousands, if not tens of thousands of rural jobs.

There are also a whole host of staple crops, many of which are grains, that currently cannot be reliably grown in the artificial systems such as hydroponics. There are countless staple crops that would become virtually untenable should pollinator species be significantly reduced. They wouldnt even have to go extinct for the ramifications to be millions dying of starvation.

As for anaerobic growth, you’re looking at mostly low calorie fungi and some nuts/legumes. Very few species of plant could be utilized.

There are also knock-on effects to consider. Reductions in wild pollinators will have devastating effects on local flora per region, which in turn will devastate local herbivore populations. Severely limiting wild game options.

The loss of cereal crops would result in extreme difficulties maintaining large animal herds for human consumption. Specifically cows and chickens.

The loss of major terrestrial protein sources would increase our reliance on the sea. Leading to overfishing, and the eventual collapse of marine ecosystems. Themselves already threatened by changes in the global climate.

The system is tied together and very delicately balanced. And we are severely tipping that balance.

How about instead of pinning our hopes on far flung options that may never materialize, we just stop fucking up the home we have like a bunch if spoiled fucking rejects.

I’m surprised that the Trump administration haven’t formed a taskforce to kill invasive species. They seem to do so well against innocent brown people whose crime is to check notes migrate across the border with their children in the hopes of a better life.

Funny, because I didn’t realise you were one of the doomers in the Covid outbreak thread talking about the futility of finding both a vaccine and a solution to the pandemic, but here we are.

The stuff I talk about here is hardly revolutionary, and has next to no technical hurdles to overcome in order to implement. The only thing lacking to implement solutions like different growing methodologies and synthetic meats is sociopolitical will.

Lets look at the efficiency numbers of farming, as in how many joules of sunlight does it take to produce ‘x’ calories of food (Courtesy of Isaac Arthur): Using rounded numbers to make the math easier, but still relevant for the point I’m trying to make, a hectare of land will produce 23900574 calories (100 gigajoules) of food per year under near-optimal conditions for a staple crop. That 100 gigajoules worth of food energy that it produces per year will get hit with that much sunlight in a few hours. At best you’re getting a 0.1% conversion of sunlight into food energy. Hardly the most efficient process, even after all technological progress made on food production since before history began.

The technologies talked about in the video aren’t science fiction at this point, and while I concede would be disruptive to society and jobs, would be worth it for the gains made, especially since food and water insecurity still are major drivers of conflict in the world.

More broadly, I detest the notion that our economies have to be sacrificed in order to protect the environment. Again, there are (near term) technological solutions that don’t sacrifice either our economies or our comfort while also protecting the environment that we care about. All environmental legislation falls on the shoulders of those both least responsible and least able to enact change. Just look at the yellow vest protests in Metropolitan France, for example.

Stupid failed ideas being promoted are IMO the worst thing about the current pandemic, behind the people getting sick and/or dying. Socialism isn’t any more viable or workable now than it was before the pandemic, so I really wish people would stop pushing it, or the various forms of primitivism.

A message a friend sent over Discord:
An interesting point I saw someone bring up on a reddit thread: honeybees are not native to the Americas, and the over-focusing on saving them overshadows the loss of native species that, while not producers of vast amounts of honey, are the actual pollinators of many native trees, crops, and flowers.
So native pollinators are ignored just like Native Americans; that’s good to know. /s

The difference between the US and North Korea?

One is a backwards country with a long history of human rights abuses, run by an insane person who has a cult thanks to a 24/7 propaganda machine.

The other is North Korea.
