I think that’s his way of reassuring people. Would you prefer it if he went on about how everyone was going to die and COVID would be forever? Considering how many suicides have happened since the lockdown happened, I don’t think that’s the message our leader should be putting out. If anything, he’s being optimistic. It’s kind of like how a president would say ‘we will win the war’ even as people are dying in trenches. It’s purely for morale.

Disney opening their doors is a crime against humanity because of all the people that will likely get sick or worse

It’s true it isn’t always the best strategy but you don’t know that until afterward. Morale is a very important thing when times are hard.

When Churchill called the British people to resist during WW2, he never downplayed how tough an opponent the Nazis would be (“blood, toil, sweat and tears” anyone?) and he did more for his people’s morale than any pre-war declaration of Neville Chamberlain downplaying the dangerosity of Hitler (or the complacency of a French army self-assured they’d soon “hang their laundry on the Siegfried line” — we all know how that went down).
 
The same goes here: Trump had the choice between lying to the people on the dangerosity of the pandemic, giving them a false sense of security that’d do nothing to protect them against the virus, or call them to caution by insisting how important barrier gestures are to keep oneself safe in that situation.  
Guess which approach would’ve saved the more lives? Guess which Trump, being the pathological liar he is, picked?

I don’t think it was him lying. Lying implies one is trying to deceive someone. It really seems like he was just trying to be optimistic. Besides, everyone else was already talking about the dangers of the pandemic so it’s not like there weren’t already people making it known.
 
My point is that one doesn’t know if their strategy is a good one until after its implemented. History has shown that many times.

Good points. I don’t believe he was flat out lying either, though I do wish he had taken a hard stance on masks. China’s president is still 100% responsible for this whole thing in the end.

It’s not an excuse, its an explanation. People tend to think the worse when it comes to Trump, so I tend to see things differently. Yes, there are times he’s wrong or brutish but he hasn’t lied about this. Him saying ‘I hope for x’ or the like isn’t a lie.

He didn’t say that he “hoped that it was X”, he literally downplayed Coronavirus’s potential danger. This isn’t nothin’ about “thinking the worse,” when the guy is saying the worse. Your blatant dishonesty isn’t fooling anyone except for perhaps yourself, to be honest.
 
He refused to wear a mask except just recently and he compared the Coronavirus to a regular flu. He wasn’t on top of this virus like previous presidents who had pandemics. We still lack a concrete and standard testing program for the virus and not only that but due to our horrifically terrible healthcare system people are still going to be charged outta their ass for getting infected.
 
So combine our atrocious healthcare system which makes people not report that they may be infected due to the potential healthcare costs, the absolutely terrible example that the “president” is setting which encourages Covidiots to go out and have “Corona Parties” or somehow think that masks are harming “God’s beautiful breathing system” and you have a downright nasty toxic concoction of hopelessness, ignorance, arrogance and stupidity.
 
Its natural selection at this point for those who don’t listen.

Trump just a short while ago said that people are wearing masks as a way to disapprove of him. Not because, you know, there’s a pandemic or anything. That shows where his mindset is on this issue.
