More intermittent energy sources only increases the demand for fracking and natural gas to fill gaps in supply, which is why German gas consumption has risen 20% in the last five years. Their demand is expected to rise even further, which is why the government proceeded with the Nord Stream 2 pipeline despite the… difficult diplomatic situation it puts them in.

The sad part is that your only response to this will be calling me “brainwashed by anthropogenic climate change deniers”. Please study energy economics before opining so… forcefully and partisanly.

Jeez people didn’t know what that term meant? Cheech did a skit about being a coyote dealer on one of the C&C albums.

I watched people who had used the term within the past week pretend they didn’t know what it meant. I’m not sure if they’d honestly managed to manipulate themselves into forgetting it to score political points, or if they were just openly lying. To be honest I’m not sure which is more twisted.

I agree, and medieval stasis is ahistorical because there was a lot of scientific and engineering advancements made between the fall of the Western Roman Empire and the Renaissance.

Their ignorance is understandable though, because like with the advancements in 3D-printed firearm technology, if you aren’t aware then it can appear that nothing is happening in the proscribed time-space. Also not helping is popular cultural depictions of the middle-ages as backwards and with little development.

As for exhaustion of ‘non-renewables’* hampering technological progress, their usage per-person has fallen precipitously since 2005 (or there abouts) thanks to technological advancements and advancements in recycling. It would honestly take an epic nuclear war where everywhere was attacked or a gamma ray burst to knock us back to the proverbial Stone Age at this point.

*(I’m of the Isaac Arthur school of thought that non-renewables should be used to describe things that can’t easily be synthesised or supplemented)

…I can think of a myriad of reasons why aliens have not yet made contact with us, and what you’re suggesting is absolutely not one of them, even though it does have its effects on the environment that us—and other species on this planet—live in.

It absolutely impossible. Nothing on this planet completely sacred, 100% from human activity or, if not directly changed or affected by human activity, the effects of human activity.

Sure…until you realise that fossil fuels would exist on those planets too if life also evolved there. Intelligent life doesn’t happen overnight, after all.

I will grant you that it is certainly plausible that an industrial revolution is not guaranteed through one reason or another, even if there are fossil fuels there to power it.

@Ebalosus
Fossil fuels require some pretty specific conditions though, both to form and particularly to trap in reservoirs. Doubt we’ll ever know how likely they are to form, unless we manage to find out a lot more about extrasolar planets. But it’s conceivable there’s millions of worlds out there where civilizations never got beyond the water wheel for the habitable life of their world.

Really makes you appreciate how lucky we are to have gotten a jump start like this.

Yeah, that is a major problem with politics these days, and just people coming to conclusions on policies, in general.

By socialist, are you a “democratic socialist” (dem-soc), or a textbook example-type of socialist, or are you just a dem-soc that, unlike Bernie Sanders, is 100% against all forms—not just the worst—of capitalism existing?

Well, not indisputable in that people keep disputing it… mainly white moderates.

In other news, I saw Biden described in Reddit as “the median of the Democratic Party” or somesuch. What do people here think?
Background Pony #68DC
@Latecomer
I think Biden is a savvy politician who will generally move where he thinks he will win. As the Democrats have shifted left he has gone slightly with them but still wants to be fairly moderate

Some people have previously asked me “what’s so bad about Trump?” and I’ve had difficulty answering. Could I possibly post a list I found elsewhere?
