A few MONTHS now? Mate, porn bots have been an issue for a few YEARS.
The porn bots were NOT the only reason either.
The porn bots were NOT the only reason either.
A quick recap:
Tumblr had a porn bot problem for a fewmonthsYEARS now, which users had pleaded for the site’s staff to deal with it. Whether or not they did anything is up for debate. Due to said porn bot problem, the Tumblr app was removed from both the iOS AppStore and Google PlayStore, since Tumblr is no longer “safe for work”. In a desperate attempt to get back its app online, Tumblr released its own bots to remove these NSFW content. It is said that Tumblr had planned originally to remove NSFW content in order to appeal advertisers, but was forced to act earlier than expected due to app removal. Unfortunately, these Tumblr bots are very broken and would flag contents which aren’t even close to suggestive ie; a painting of Jesus, reblogs of various topics, itself, etc.. Thus, many porn artists who use Tumblr to share their work, are now in threat of deletion and subsequent bannings. Thus, these artists protest against Tumblr’s choice of action due to the danger it possesses against their very livelihood and also demands Tumblr to fix the whole porn bot problem (still there). Recently, Tumblr’s @staff released a post, saying that it will now ban all NSFW content, instead of dealing with the porn bots (again, it’s still there). So, artists and content creators alike are migrating to various different sites, most notably Newgrounds and Twitter. Some opt to stay, while others simply created a few alternate accounts on other sites. While the porn bots weren’t the sole reason, it did catalyse the whole “no longer on mobile” thing.
Basically, according to the new guidelines, the NSFW ban is supposed to only apply to photographs of “inappropriate” content. Drawings and text posts can be appealed and then should be fine.
Assuming Tumblr’s appeals and enforcement processes have ever been or ever will be fair.
