Yep. You don’t “need” to spend money, but they do their best to push you to do so. Especially with time-limited events.

Shadow of War swore up and down that its loot boxes didn’t effect the gameplay loop. After they removed loot boxes a year after release they had to also reduce the in-game grind to compensate.

I’ve played Genshin Impact for a couple of months this year. It has a very typical premise, with the tropes of the chosen one, the happy kingdom after crossing a brigde, the annoying characters, anime art direction, etc.

Overall, it’s a solid game with a bunch of very irritating characters. But for a videogame that’s free, it’s decent. If you don’t have the money to play Breath of the Wild, this one checks most of the marks.
