The term Metroidvania is dumb

“Doom clone” made sense back in the day when we didn’t really have an alternative. But it’s been a good 30+ years, we can do better than “Metroidvania”.

Exploration games where you return to areas you visited before with new ways to explore and interact.

It’s named after the gameplay style of Metroid and Castlevania, which as Mean said centers around map exploration where unlocking new powers or gadgets or what-have-you let’s you access new areas in old places.

I will argue it’s a better term than something like platformer. Most people have an idea about how a Metroid game plays.

The Origin of the term came from people wanting to Describe Castlevania games that copied Metroid vs Classic Castlevania gameplay
