I thought Roman Reigns made some excellent points in the interview he did, talking about how AEW is given more of a pass because it’s newer and that unlike WWE, it appeals more to a hardcore wrestling fan. A lot of that is covered in truth, as AEW is still very much a relatively new company and therefore has been given the benefit of the doubt. I do think AEW CAN appeal to a more mainstream audience with enough time and build, but when you bring guys like Nick Gage and Minoru Suzuki for one shots– even though both are incredible in their own special ways– a majority of the mainstream audience will be like “Who the hell is that?”
All these wrestling fans being up in arms about Roman’s comments kinda feel like AEW fanboys with their heads buried in their pillows. Like, “How dare you try to criticize the competition?” Ironically, they’re in essence proving Roman’s point right. Then again, you could say the same with WWE fans. It’s far from being just an AEW thing. All those stans you see when you criticize something Alexa Bliss did or Sasha Banks did, it’s downright embarrassing. Nobody is incapable of not messing up, so why put on such obsessive behavior?
I know fan tribalism was rampant during the Monday Night Wars, but I find it hard to believe it was as toxic as it is nowadays what with the advent of social media. It’s just exasperated the problem so much. It’s like if you criticize AEW in any specific way, you get labeled as a hater. Likewise, if you mentioned something you dislike about WWE’s product, you’ll get labeled as an AEW bootlicker. It’s just all so incredibly stupid.
