Informing of bans/probations for comments

I think it would be a good idea if when a user is punished for making rule-breaking comments, that the admin who executes the punishment should note the punishment in the comments section, as it would dissuade other users from making similar comments.

Or they could read the site rules.

I think he means having a mod post “User was banned for this post because of reasons” in the thread the guy was banned over.
 
People reading (and following) the rules would be nice, but it’s a terribly unrealistic expectation. Like reading a EULA/TOS before clicking “Accept”.

I thought he was suggesting telling everyone how long the user was banned

I agree with this. Justice must be seen to be done, or it’s all completely irrelevant. To effectively deter rulebreaking, punishments must be visible to the wider population. I never bought into the mods’ promise that they’d enforce certain system tags because I’ve seen very little actual moderation on this site over the past year - I can count modded thread posts on my hands, and I’ve seen exactly one temp-ban.
 
 
As to the TOS/EULA stuff, I’ve actually read a few of those. They’re almost entirely copy-paste jobs - if you’ve read one, you know exactly what the rest say. A dozen pages of legalese that boil down to “we can do whatever the fuck we want unless local laws say otherwise”.

I’ve banned lots of people.  
LOTS and LOTS of people.  
Almost all are temporary bans lasting just a day and usually people learn from their mistakes without need of public humiliation.  
Usually I comment on blatent or intentional rule violations in-thread.
 
You can think whatever you want, but there’s so much going on that you obviously don’t/can’t see, man, you just have no idea…

You can tell when TLL is online because the User Ban list goes from its usual red “expired” states to a whole lot of green “active” states.
 
And generally, yeah, for short 1-3 day bans we don’t really say anything; the ban is bad enough. For those kind people that have somehow managed to merit more, we will generally comment in the thread that triggered whatever action, if only for comedy value.

I dont read rules. I do what I do.

As an MSPA forum mod, I find that having something on the offending posts that visibly denotes action was taken helps.
 

 
Plus having a ban log where we publically state why we ban people. (Since ours last for a minimum of a week.)

Now this is something I can get behind, though given the nature of the website, I am not sure how it can be done. If mods can edit other users posts, then I suggest some note at the bottom. If not, then leaving a comment in the thread.  
Hoewever, since I assume users can also get bans for uploads, then perhaps a ban list is also in order.

Day-long probations strike me as being too much of a slap on the wrist. Repeated offenders should get longer probations, and outright disregard for any big rules (“loli” art, DNPs, etc.) should probably result in a long probation or even a permanent ban.

We could list all bans and ban reasons, but, uh, it’s a long list, and we can’t list the IP bans because, you know, IPs.

Day long bans are usually for when someone breaks rule #0 or #7 (caught saying something like “stop being so autistic” or posting an explicit image on a Safe image thread) and they’re not a new user (in which case we generally just delete and point to the rules). Repeat offenders and more serious offenses graduate to three day bans, then a week, month, three month and finally the full thousand years for the ones we know don’t change.
 
We do have some exceptions and go the full thousand years for certain special people that manage to mess up real bad real fast; ie intentionally go out of their way to break the rules.
 
And as always, if someone feels they’ve been banned for too long or deserves a second change, they’re free to PM us. Doing so has a generally good track record versus crossing your arms in a huff and vowing to be more of a dick when/if you come back.
