Rule #0 Policy Refinement Feedback Thread

You’re assuming they’re a bad actor. For all you know, this is a re-imagining of a situation the artist was actually in. It should be about what the art says here, and I would argue that is is reasonable to come away from this art with the idea that racism is uncomfortable.

“promotion of or propaganda for prejudicial views”
How would this apply to something like this?

Depicting a good villain can be difficult, if not actually impossible to differentiate from propaganda/promotion. Making villains cool, or even putting forth why they’re reasonable from their own perspective is just good storytelling, especially when the villains are explicitly evil.

One of the most important things people can learn from storytelling in videos, art, comics (of which this site hosts many), books or any other media is the horrifying and difficult realization that the reader/viewer is capable of becoming the villain, no matter how virtuous or how objective they think their morality is. In fact, the more they’re certain of their virtue, the more likely they’ll not use the introspection to realize that they’re the baddies.

I don’t think a policy that makes hosting that kind of art impossible is a good one. Especially for an archive site.

Isn’t Derpi meant to be an archival/collection site? Archiving isn’t promotion. It’s just letting people know something exists and happened. In fact, it’s usually the people who want to do something bad that don’t want it archived, not the other way around.

Sounds good, though it’d be nice to include artist intent in there as well. Shocking/offensive material isn’t necessarily harmful, especially if it the intent was something more meaningful/nuanced and not meant to simply offend people.

Villains in media have story arcs that explain and make clear their shortcomings and the problems with their beliefs. A villain can look cool at certain times in a story, but still be depicted as wrong by the time the story is over. When a villain is only depicted as cool and winning, that basically the definition of propaganda.

I think the biggest sticking point is going to be

prejudicial views

and whether it will be enforced as written to everything or if there will be situations of.
“A being prejudiced to B is not okay.”
“B being prejudiced to A is okay.”
You can say it won’t, but we don’t actually know that until the rule is implemented and you all start applying it, I’m just reiterating the viewpoint in as unbiased a manner as i can manage.

@Princess Luna
Well that’s definitely going to be enlightening, i’d be hard-pressed to call it serious propaganda as opposed to a shitpost that’s just high quality, especially with the jojo theme added.

This is exactly why we should have never gotten to this point, where compromise is required. Artist intent is incredibly important to the image, but at this point I guess this compromise will have to do. Irreconcilable differences led us to this path. I no longer consider derpi an archive, but hopefully as much images as possible can be saved.

Trust me lad, I know. But I guess now there’s other sites to be actual archives, and there really isn’t much of a way forward at this point, with all damage done, without some sort of will to compromise on both sides. I’ve been seeing that a lot here and other places, we’re all just tired of fighting. Well, most of us normal non-clout addicted people are.

Derpibooru can just be a social media platform now, or an art sharing website like Deviant Art.

You can die peacefully. The leaks have confirmed that they have never been an archive for a very long time nor they were intending to do that.

Only the Pony Archive fits in that category. Derpibooru being an archive, unlike the slippery slope, is an actual fallacy.

I am not opposed to moderators reflecting on the images on the site, I.e. looking for things that violate rule #0, but I think any change of rule #0 is overreacting. The rule in question already tells people to be ‘nice’ to one another. If people are using images to actively go after other users, then it violates #0, if not then it should stay.

For years I’ve had the mantra of, “We have a blacklist, use it.” Drilled into me, even in the face of things that violated #2 - how is the blacklist supposed to work then? My protest to all of this is to reiterate to those offended, “We have a blacklist, use it.”

So what happens when the story is being told in installments, or you’re just making art of a character or moment within it?

If there are installments then it’s fine. That would be made clear by the artist.

I don’t think it’s an endorsement of the view, that’s why I said it would fall under the already existing rule #0. It just seems to derive humor from spouting a racial slur. Pinkie’s reaction seems like a minor detail that’s easy to miss. But I understand the decision to keep it when the reaction is the focus of the image. To me it seemed like the image was just intended to incite drama, but the comments are mostly about memories with racist family members. It’s probably my lack of racist family members that made me see the image differently.

“USE THE FILTERS” This already exists as an entire rule (Rule #4), so it’s a bit of a wonder why people don’t seem to quite get it.
Though tbh, it’s not like the vast majority of users actually read the rules.
