source linking directly to image

these direct image aren’t acceptable as source links, are they?  
i can hardly figure the tumblr or gallery or photostream they belong to from it

People have been doing this since forever, I’m guessing because this was (is?) how things are done in danbooru and others. I’ve long since given up fixing this shit. If the mods don’t care and the artists don’t care, why should anyone else care.

I can understand direct linking if the source is imgur, since that site’s set up really weird anyway.
 
But it really drives me up the wall when people (usually anons) directly link to an image on deviantArt or tumblr. Maybe I want to actually see the artist’s site so that I can check and see if they’ve drawn something else I might like? (which is usually the case if I bother to view the source).

because if it’s from tumblr, artist tag isn’t taken, uploader doesn’t manually tag the artist, and there’s no way to find out where the image came from through google reverse image search
 
pretty much the same with most other places. beside dA, with the filename_artist.jpg in filename

I care, I care a lot. Whenever I find an image with a direct image link I try to find the actual source. And if I can’t, then that’s that. No point deleting it.
 
We can’t make a rule saying “never use image as a direct source” because many times the uploader’s source is something they found on a forum or tumblr that had no artist/source information.
 
Please stop assuming that because everything on the board isn’t sparkling perfect it means the mods don’t care, it’s getting really grating.
