Deep down, even before she went to Ponyville, Twilight always wanted some friends, but she kept resisting the feeling by reading more books.

Part of her besides wanting to focus on her books was also her worry she would not be a good enough friend or vice versa. She felt it safer to just retreat into her books.

Only in the Pilot did she finally stop resisting friendship's grasp.
