IDW Comics - Story Discussion (Spoilers)

Did anyone else like the part where Twilight combined her magic with Spike to produce a fire-blast to launch the meteor out the party cannon? That was a really inventive use of pony and dragon magic.

Why did they need magic to light the party cannon again? And if the magic is so dangerous, why were they physically touching it?

Lighting the cannon wasn’t the end goal, getting rid of the magic quickly was.
 
It just also helped remove the physical meteor in the process.

Actually, I hated it and thought it was a very crappy way to solve a trouble: by pulling off a skill out from nowhere, which wasn’t even available for the way older and experiences alicorn princesses and which makes Twilight an even way more broken character than before.
 
If the ability to absorb powerful magic had been hinted from before, cool. But it came out from nowhere, which is lazy and crappy writing so no.

Things are gonna get a little weird~  

So I skimmed through it, and I thought that it was a SLIGHT improvement over the first part, but only a slight one, and it wasn’t enough to save the story.
 
Once again, the problem is that EVERYONE is taking the situation way too seriously, instead of just one or two characters who have utterly straight-faced reactions to the absurdity.

If that wasn’t explicitely said in the comic by Twilight herself, then it’s nothing but mental gym and your own headcanon.
 
It wasn’t, so my point stands, sorry.
 
For the record, when the cartoon gives special skills to Twilight at least they make her comment on how conveniently she just happened to have studied that particular spell, either before or after she used it. In this comic it just happened w/o any explanation.

It’s over and thanks to Celestia sweeping the apples under a magic rug, we can forget this ever happened.

I just thought that all of the unicorn magic that she knows was carried over into her alicorn magic. Plus, why wouldn’t she switch to alicorn magic in combat?

The assumption that it’s another case of Twilight copying a spell doesn’t even really work, since usually when she does it, the spells looks and acts exactly the same as whatever she copied, but it just has less power (see: the gem-finding spell in A Dog and Pony Show, which she could barely make the gems appear for more than a second, or the shield spells she used in Return of Harmony and Ponyville Confidential, which she probably copied from her brother). From what I could tell (again, I basically skimmed it), the thing Twilight did there was different from how the apples were doing it.

Twilight never explicitly commented about how she can teleport in an any episode, so every time she does it without saying “hello viewers: I can teleport by the way” is a plot hole then? Since according to you we can never look back at previous stories to know what a character can do and everything needs verbal confirmation.

It’s not like this the first time we’ve seen Twilight or another character absorb magic either.  
Twilight’s Kingdom has both her and Tirek absorb magic. It’s clearly a kind of magic that exists in Equestria, and Twilight’s special talent is studying magic.

I actually can buy Twilight being able to pull off that last scene, but the latest issue treats her apparent new magic modification and ability lazily overall, regardless of how technically feasible apparent plotholes are given what we know from canon and earlier scenes.
 
Honestly, I’m surprised more people aren’t pointing out the scene where Luna pops out of nowhere, apparently gets owned by the apples, and then loses plot relevancy.

after reading this 33rd issue (minus the teaser pages we got spoiled), I really didn’t mind this second part. maybe the first part just threw at us everything ridiculous, which negated pretty much everything dumb in the second part. and the names.. oh GOD THE NAMES!! how they still haunt my dreams!
 
piece of shit/10. eh. it was actually not that bad.. not great, but definitely not offensive. plus, Good stuff near the end, even if I would have liked it better if it were part of a more Luna/Celestia centric story and not have something like it wasted in here. Then again, that was the one and only note worthy part of the entire thing, which is probably a good thing too.

That bugged me, but it was just a fraction of a whole lot of “wrongs” this two-shot did. Glad it’s wrapped up, though I can’t say I’m looking forward to the next few arcs.

Okay, just want to get this straight, Fluttershy took control of Flutterbat because this separate persona counts as an animal?
 
Because that sounds way too easy.

Everyone’s saying how great dual personalities are, but that seems hindered by it being an artificially made one(when she her own home-grown demons) and the fact that the loophole I just mentioned makes it a pretty one-sided inner fight.

Also note how Fluttershy was congratulated by Celestia for her epic single panel of massive character development, but basically no one thanked Pinkie for risking her life–to say nothing of how Twilight brushed her off after sending her out on that mission–and discovering critical information without which Good Apple may have simply been sucked dry. But that would’ve required writing believable dialog and likeable characters, rather than putting the spotlight on bat ponies and the fan favorite pony.
 
I’m not letting this go. The next arc will have to be a surprise home-run for me to take the comics seriously again.

You know, looking at the comic, Good Apple and Bad Apple are flatter than particle board.
 
Bad Apple’s purpose is as a scapegoat of sorts for the entire apple army, and Good Apple just magically converts all of them at once because reasons.

I’d expect more of a role and not them being glorified plot devices.
 
Although these days in the comics that isn’t surprising.
