I admire both.

I do think I like Sunny more. I love how she is such proactive character. She is not only the leader but also the heart and soul of the Mane Five. If she were real, history would probably remember her as some famous historical figure like Florence Nightingale or Theodore Roosevelt. There’s something larger than life about her.

Twilight I do admire too though. I think she is not as grand as Sunny, but instead she is more relatable. She might be the most powerful unicorn in G4 but she is very humble and always looking to do the right thing. I used think Twilight was boring but maybe that’s the point. She doesn’t care to stand out too much, just wants to do her job.

Character development? I don’t think turning him into a whiny manbaby who complains when he doesn’t get what he wants, endangering others for his own selfish gains, acting all passive aggressive just to help “teach” someone a lesson and brought and faking a genuine death speech counts as “character development” but that’s way too off topic for this thread.

My point is, I hope he’ll be written better if they brought him back in G5, which seems unlikely.

Character development simply means a gradual change in character. In this case, his methods and mindset never truly changed, but his priorities and what he valued did.

They’re called flaws. You can’t have character development if a character has no flaws to overcome. Besides, there was that episode that showed Discord can’t stop being chaotic or else he’ll fade away and die.

How would you react if, in the G5 series, Sprout is reduced to a racist strawman who only exists so Sunny can look better?

Depends on the execution as with all things related to storytelling. If that is all he will be good for then it would be better for him to not appear often. Ultimately, Sunny should have more going for her than just being inclusive about who she’d be friends with. I mean, she needs to be a naturally charming character for her to befriend anyone at all - even if we are talking about another earth pony like her.

That said, I do wonder how Hitch is her only real friend in Maretime Bay despite her being an uplifting character to be around, in my opinion. In fact, she strikes me as someone who can get more ponies on her side if just because she could get other ponies attached to her. Izzy, Zipp and Pipp following her to Maretime Bay just to stay friends does allude to this, you know?

I personally would be shocked if a kid’s show did that. MLP has always promoted core traditional values and virtues required by individuals to allow a society to function.

It is such a negative message to tell children that people never get better because they are what they are born into. Even Decepticons had defectors. Even Darth Vader turned on the 11th hour because his son never lost faith in him.

Has behavioral sink really sank western story telling preferences this low now?

We can only guess how far down the new gen has to go.

How did it feel when the mane 6 only existed to make Starlight look good?

Yeah. I’m sure the mane 6 never got captured by Chrysalis because they’re so competent and needed Starlight to save them.

Well, Starlight, Trixie, Discord and Thorax. With The Mane Six being the ones who inspired Thorax in the first place.

Nobody ever complains that in Dragonshy, the rest of The Mane Six only exist to make Fluttershy look good, or that in Winter Wrap Up, the other characters only exist to make Twilight look good. People only ever seem to complain when it’s Starlight.

I assure you I hate that kind of writing. Lowering other characters just to prop up others is a terrible way to “foil.” Its much worse for the mane 6 because they’ve had more episodes. Starlight just happens to be the most notorious because she came in to the series late but that doesn’t mean she’s the only character used that way.

That but also, unlike Fluttershy, Twilight or the rest of the mane 6, she is or was a villain.

Dragonshy and Winter wrap up weren’t that bad. They’re good and funny episodes. The only problem I had with these two episodes, especially the second one, is that they’re a bit too slow.

I had not thought of that but it does make sense. If a story is written to prop up a (former) villain character by squashing down an established hero character, the squash down must be severe. So severe that it appears jarring to the average audience.
