Season 6 Episode Discussion [Speculation/Theories/Beware of Spoilers]

Hmph. Suddenly I feel a lot less cynical about S6.
 
Mind you, I’m still none too optimistic about the writers developing Ersatz Shimmer. For the record, it’s not that I think they can’t develop her or shouldn’t develop her; I just think they’ll go about it all wrong.

Unless they writers are a bunch of steps ahead of us and have everything planned out in a sound and logical manner, I have similar concerns about how the show is going to handle crazy pony.
 
Other than the elephant in the room, I’m always up for another season of ponies.

Speaking of which I’m curious as to what the writers actually thought of Starlight Glimmer in regards to her episodes. I mean if we take those last few minutes of her as any indication they’re probably on a different wavelength in regards to her characterization compared to most of the fandom.
 
 
I wish we could get exploration of like anything we’ve seen so there’s that too look forward to this season.

Possibly usually when you make a character of any sort there’s a possibility that what you think of their portrayal is completely different from how someone else views them. If they honestly think that she’s just misunderstood then holy crap then she’s always been badly written or she should’ve never been that type of villain from the get-go since if they’re going by the misunderstood characterization then they failed entirely for most people. I’m worried they actually thought that day otherwise they’d be bragging on Twitter, etc about her characterization.
 
Truthfully this goes for all characters as well. Just because you have a vision of a character doesn’t mean that’s how they’ll turn out.

Yeah I felt more optimistic as well, mostly because that image reminded me that there are a ton more ponies out there, not just Shitlight Glimmer.

I’m still under the impression that they were probably at least planning to reform her in some fashion from the start, they just weren’t sure how to go about doing it at first, and that’s what Larson meant when he said it “wasn’t planned” from the start.

If that’s what they were planning, then they should’ve made Glimmer less smarmy and unsympathetic and given her some redeeming qualities. Seriously, she’s like Babs Seed on steroids.

Only bad thing she actually did with lasting impact was Our Town. Sorry if I don’t want to crucify someone who knew she was doing wrong deep down and was probably mentally ill from childhood in some form.

She still fucked with time, even if everything was “fixed” at the end.
 
As an aside, since when did Glimmer “know she was wrong?” If anything, she thought was right up until Twilight’s little speech (or maybe up until Twilight showed her the ashlands timeline, if we’re being generous).
 
Also, I have no interest in crucifying Glimmer: I just wish they’d either done a better job or avoided redeeming her altogether.

Nah I think the biggest problem was that they whitewashed her actions yet the audience still knew she did them.  
Oh yeah and they had to switch her character to get her likable which didn’t work as intended probably. Yay.
 
 
Though there was the glorious yet somehow bad fix fic of her redemption on Fimfiction that comments are glorious.

I have my doubts about Felicia Day guest-starring in season 6, or even at all.

Ultimately does not matter. Moot point when trying to discuss bad things she’s done.
 
Also, am I the only person who had a bully that did have severe problems of his own and used bullying as a way to find control? Every person I’ve seen who hates Babs always insists that there’s only one kind of bully and that the show didn’t make one that exists. Well hot damn, guess my own experience doesn’t matter.

She knew she was doing bad things, but she actually thought it would all be for the best until Twilight showed her the wasteland.
 
Reminds me of The Master in FO1. Creates the Super Mutants and raids vaults and settlements to create his “perfect” race because he beleives its the best way to survive in the irradiated world. But you can skip the boss fight entirely just by showing him definite proof that the mutants are sterile. He flat out gives up and lets you go while he nukes his own fortress out of severe guilt.

I see no reason to sympathize with her, regardless of her backstory: Babs sold out her family to avoid being bullied, then sold out her new friends to avoid getting punished. The writers spent so much time in that episode showing her being horrible and terrorizing the CMC’s, then expected us to instantly sympathize with her after one line of dialogue from Applejack about how she was bullied back in Manehatten.

It was pretty poorly done then since if that was what they were going for they either utterly failed because Starlight never had any actual proof that her ideology was wrong just her way she had gotten her revenge. Makes me wonder if a scene was deleted somewhere.

Actually it does matter because the audience knows she did it. That’s the equivalent of someone robbing someone everyone knows they did it then getting off because lol no evidence. No people are still going to hate said person regardless and the fact they got off will enrage them further.
 
I’m pretty sure they’re are different types of bullies though. It depends on the personality.
