If Sunny were an IRL horse, what breed would she be?
My money is on Standardbred. From the movie, we know she can pull a cart and is more warm-blooded than a draft horse. This means that she also would have an additional gait that most other ponies lack.

I don’t know all that much about real life horses, honestly. I don’t study them all that often. So I wouldn’t know what kind of horse breed Sunny specifically would be.
Then again, I don’t think any pony in MLP is supposed to resemble any real life horse breeds. They are fictional ponies, really. I think they are meant to be their own species not found here on Earth.

Sometimes I headcanon that ponies are actually more closely related to earlier ancestors of the modern horse, maybe somewhere between Merychippus and Pliohippus. In Equestria, ponies did not evolve to be larger and faster because at a certain point, they became one of the more dominant species (thanks magic!), and therefore did not have to worry about predators so much.

Remember how you were all complaining about the lack of Alicorn Sunny in TyT? Well, it seems the writers heard your complaints, because the most recent episode of TyT is full of Alicorn Sunny. For that reason, I would say I really liked it. It did a lot to further my understanding of Sunny’s abilities, and it had some pretty amusing moments in it, as well.

@Eragor14

That is like it came straight out of a shonen anime. Reminds me of Bleach with Ichigo using Getsuga Tenshou.
Anyways, if that isn’t cool I don’t know what is.
I noticed this show puts a greater emphasis on what being an alicorn is like than G4. Twilight easily learned how to use her newfound wings for instance and it was never a plot point. After all G4 was more focused on her getting used to being a Princess, a Leader, than an alicorn.

Hear, hear, Cosmas! I definitely felt that way when I saw that as well. I think that will go down as one of the most memorable moments of TyT. Just so much awesomeness in one scene. It also goes to show the benefits of 2D animation, as well-there are certain things that you can do more easily with 2D animation compared to 3D, such as showing action scenes like that one.
Honestly, the fact that G5 is going into the very essence of what it truly means to be an Alicorn is one of the best aspect of the series. As you said, Twilight got her powers a bit too easily, I felt. Early on they didn’t elaborate all that much about what her powers were like, other than the fact that she was effectively an Earth pony, pegasus, and unicorn put together (and since she was a unicorn before becoming an Alicorn, Twilight was already quite used to her magical abilities). I am glad they are elaborating more on that with G5, and I am glad that they made the Alicorn an Earth Pony this time around since it means she has to practice using both magic and flight, whereas Twilight only really needed to learn flight.
Hopefully we get more scenes like this both in TyT and the upcoming MyM series in September.

IMO, the weakest part of FiM’s handling of Twilight becoming an alicorn princess was that it was intended to be a “she lived happily ever after” series-ending moment. There was no plan to build up to it and, far worse, no plan on how to follow up. As I always say, my favorite parts of S4 were the parts where Twilight outright says something like “WTF? What do I do as a princess?” or “let’s just pretend I’m a normal pony”.
Let’s hope that we get more scenes of Sunny learning to fly & levitate this fall.

Definitely agree with this. I feel like they should have done more to show Twilight helping other ponies around Ponyville on a day to day basis. When she was suddenly thrust into the role of leader of Equestria after having run a school for a season, it really felt out of place, as if it wasn’t fully earned. I can imagine the ending wasn’t even fully planned out as the showrunners didn’t know when Hasbro planned on pulling the plug on FiM, so they may have had a completely different plan altogether for S9 and possibly plans for S10 as well.
The fact that they are showing Sunny training to use her powers, though, gives me hope that she will have a more natural transition than Twilight did, and she will have more time to just be a normal pony as opposed to being a pseudo god as Twilight was at the end of S9.

Call me light-hearted and far too uncritical. But I love Sunny. Much! (Second to Izzy) And I already love her path to becoming an Alicorn Princess. Although I’m a G4 hardcore fan, I want to know more about how Alicorns are made. Even if Alicorn Issues A.) doesn’t really work well with the previous “lore” and B.) and the whole thing sheds a whole new light on Alicorns at all.
But I really like G5 so far. It’s not perfect. Neither was G4. Still I love the way MLP is playing with expectations at the moment and what it is actually implementing. I just wonder what all the glitter is all about. And when Sunny dissolves a tidal wave into thin air… Is this their way of doing a Thanos finger snap? Holy f**k! Celestia and Luna COULD have done something. COUGH! ;-D

You have the right attitude as usual, good sir. The thing with MLP is it’s so decentralized that it’s pointless to bicker about what’s canon and what’s not. It’d be naive to think that G5 is always going to play by G4 rules.
It is kinda neat learning how Alicorn magic works through Sunny. Seems that a lot of it has to do with having a complete sense of self: The swag she gets from Pipp, the bravery from Zipp, the inspiration from Izzy, the compassion from Hitch, and her belief in herself, among other things, coming together all at once at the right time. I’m guessing the glitter side effect is caused by Izzy’s influence.

Honestly, I like the way that each of the characters that Sunny has befriended visibly impact the way her abilities work. It shows how friendship is literally giving her magic, which was the name of the game in FiM. I also love your theory of the glitter being an influence from Izzy. I didn’t think of it myself when I was watching the episode, but looking back on it it makes perfect sense. After all, Izzy is obsessed with glitter, that’s something we have known since the ‘a New Generation’ movie aired last year. It makes me wonder what the solution to avoiding that will be going forward.
Another thing: I never considered the fact that Sunny’s G5 Alicorn abilities don’t follow the same rules as Twilight’s Alicorn abilities in G4. I was having so much fun watching her stop freaking TIDAL WAVES with her magic that I never considered how it compared to G4. Regardless, I think you are right about this as well, Pinto: G4 was never really consistent with itself, frequently retconning knowledge that we got in past episodes (as well as things that came in the comics). So for that reason I am still really excited to see what G5 does going forward, especially in ‘Make your Mark’.
And I love 2D Alicorn Sunny. I think they did an amazing job recreating her powers in 2D. In some ways I think I prefer it to her 3D form, since in 2D she looks more vibrant than in 3D.
